Private Waterman worked 14 change of shifts for Private Salisbury, who did not work a single change of shift in exchange.

Private Salisbury is a unique situation, as he strung together a huge number of shifts off in a row using changes of shift, along with sick days and vacation time. Salisbury took 30 Changes of shift while giving back 7. He took 29 vacation days, and also took 12 sick days. Salisbury only worked 110 shifts in our set of data, and we presume that he earned a full time salary for the year, as well as overtime working 3 shifts.

His time off is extraordinary. He was off for 28 days from 7/21/2016 – 8/17/2016, using only vacation time and the regularly scheduled off days. He was also off for 14 days from 12/2/2016 – 12/15/2016, using 6 changes of shift plus his regularly scheduled days off. He also was not at work for 12 days from 1/5/2017 – 1/16/2017, using 4 straight sick days. He was out for 22 days from 3/8/2017 – 3/29/2017 using both vacation time as well as changes of shift. He was out for 26 days from 4/8/2017 – 5/3/2017. The listed extended off time above amounts to Waterman’s other uses of change of shift served to extend his normal 4 off days by at least one extra day. He long absences (which are not illness related) amount to 102 days.

Changes of shift frequently are used on either side of 4 scheduled days off.
