The (second) great toilet paper shortage

Who would have ever thought that there would be a run on supermarkets that would result in The Great American Toilet Paper Shortage?

Few people remember that this is the second time in modern history that the phenomena has occurred.

Back in 1979, “Tonight Show” host Johnny Carson told his late night audience hat the country was running out of toilet paper and people were flocking to the stores, completely wiping out (no pun intended) shelves and stockrooms.

The power of TV “fake news,” meant as a joke by Carson, caused panic in the aisles, as demand exceeded supply.

Carson had to open his show the next night with a disclaimer, while the media reported the ruse.

We discovered this ironic piece of news while judging short films for the Rhode Island International Film Festival, laughing at a silly takeoff that was made before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hopefully, we’ll all be able to see the film and many others this summer.
