Dashing to find a cure for A-T

Sunday’s rain couldn’t dampen community spirit to find a cure for the rare childhood disease, Ataxia-telangiectasia. Seven years ago, David Gravino and the Gravino family of Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder teamed up with Cathy and Tim Martin to create what surely is the only doughboy dash to raise funds for the Children’s A-T Project. Cathy and Tim’s son, Andrew, died last August but his memory lives on, as was expressed in the prayer delivered at the start of the 5-K dash by Father Robert Marciano. Tim estimated close to 300 participated in the event that started at Iggy’s and took runners and walkers through Oakland Beach. On Monday Cathy estimated about $40,000 had been raised for the Children’s A-T Project. Making this 5K unique at the halfway mark, a team of volunteers handed out cups of water and doughboys, which participants had to take (and at least take a big bite of) to qualify as king and queen of the dash. The event ended at Iggy’s, where Gravino served up hot chowder, clam cakes and, you have it, doughboys.
