An Apple Watch alert tipped police off to a crash, which led to a subsequent DUI arrest.

Around 11:48 p.m., Nov. 9, Warwick Police were dispatched to the intersection of East and Tillinghast avenues for the report of a possible motor vehicle crash.

“Dispatch had advised that a crash had been detected from an Apple Watch and there (have) been other calls, stating that a vehicle had crashed into a wall in this area,” Warwick Police Officer Connor R. Bemis wrote in the arrest report.

Bemis found a crash when he arrived. A Tesla was on private property at 699 Bald Hill Road in the old Dunkin Donuts lot, “with the front end of the vehicle hanging onto Tillinghast Avenue.”

Fire and rescue personnel were on their way.

Police identified the driver as Justen J. Dimaio, 39, of 605 Natick Ave., Cranston.

Dimaio refused treatment when rescue arrived. According to the report he had a slight bruise on his hand, slurred speech, bloodshot watery eyes and Bemis detected “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage.”

He allegedly told police he had two beers earlier in the evening while playing pool. He told police he was traveling west on East Avenue, when a vehicle pulled out of the Chase Bank parking lot and cut him off.

Police asked Dimaio to consent to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. He consented. Following the tests, he was arrested and charged with DUI of Liquor (BAC unknown, first offense). He was also cited for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test, Leaving the Lane of Travel and Failure to Maintain Proper Control of Motor Vehicle.

DUI

Around 11:50 p.m., Nov. 10, a pair of Warwick Police officers were on Rhode Island Police Training for Impaired Driving Enforcement (RIPTIDE) patrol when they were dispatched to the area of the Cork and Rye at 255 Lambert Lind Highway for a reported motor vehicle crash.

They were the first to arrive on the scene and found a white 2016 Nissan Rogue stopped facing south in the center southbound lane with significant front-end damage. A second vehicle, a 2003 Honda Accord, was perpendicular with the road, over the curb with its front end smashed against a wall, bridge and guardrail. The Honda also had rear damage and there was a “significant debris field in the roadway caused by the impact of the vehicles,” according to the arrest report.

Police identified the driver of the Nissan as Christopher M. Janton, 32, of 117 Summit Ave., Coventry. He was standing in a crowd of people standing along the road.

Warwick Police Officer Keara M. Enos noted in the arrest report that Janton’s eyes were “extremely glossy and bloodshot” and his “speech was slurred and hard to understand at times — and he was talkative/excited in nature.”

“Janton swayed as he was standing still, and appeared to have somewhat of a dazed expression on his face,” Enos wrote.

He told police he was at Bo’s Billiards, a bar down the street at 33 Lambert Lind Highway. Janton told police that the other driver “turned left in front of me and (he) hit him,” according to the report. Enos noted that she smelled alcohol on Janton’s breath.

“I asked Janton if he consumed any alcoholic beverages prior to driving, to which he stated he did not,” Enos wrote. “He did, however, admit to smoking Marijuana.”

Police asked Janton to consent to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. He agreed. Following the tests he was arrested and charged with DUI of Liquor (BAC unknown, first offense). He was also cited for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test (first offense).

BREAKING & ENTERING

Warwick Police made a pair of arrests in a recent breaking and entering incident.

Around 7:36 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 19, Warwick Police officers were dispatched to an alarm activation at the Warwick Liquors, 445 West Shore Road.

“While officers were responding to the initial alarm activation, another neighboring business also had an alarm activation,” according to a Warwick Police press release.

The second alarm sounded at the Bader Market, 425 West Shore Road.

“Upon officers’ arrival at Warwick Liquors, the front glass door had sustained damage in an apparent attempt to gain entry into that business,” according to police. “That attempt was unsuccessful, however entry was made through the front glass door of the Bader Market.”

Police said “a variety of RI State Lottery scratch tickets” were swiped from the market.

“At the time of this initial incident, the suspects fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival,” police said. “The WPD Detective Division was assigned for further investigation.”

The investigation led to the arrest of Melissa Bedford, 43, of Providence, and an arrest warrant for Jose Capeles, 52, of Providence.

Providence Police arrested Capeles on Dec. 11 on the outstanding warrant, according to Warwick PD.

On Nov. 21, Bedford was charged with breaking and entering, attempted breaking and entering, and conspiracy. She was arraigned and released on $10,000 personal recognizance. On Dec. 12, Capeles was charged with breaking and entering, attempted breaking and entering, and conspiracy. He was arraigned and released on $20,000 with surety, according to police.
