College Notes: Five Hawks set to lead RIC

The 2019 edition of the Rhode Island College baseball team has a decidedly green-and-gold tinge with no less than five Hendricken products featuring during the squad’s start-of-season trip to Florida.

Of the quintet of former Hawks, the undisputed leader of the pack during the Anchormen’s time in the Sunshine State was Mike Webb, who was in midseason form on the mound.

The junior righty got things off on the right foot in RIC’s season opener on March 9, racking up nine strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work in a 4-2 doubling up of Westfield State.

For an encore, Webb went the distance in a 2-0 shutout of Utica six days later, beguiling the Pioneer lineup with 16 punchouts while scattering 3 hits in facing just three batters more than the minimum.

Junior Nick Feola made the most of his opportunities as the Anchormen’s backup catcher, seeing action in three games and going 5-for-11 at the plate with seven runs driven in.

Three of those runs crossed home in his season debut against Marymount on March 10, as he smacked a bases-clearing double that was the centerpiece of a five-run fourth inning that put RIC on the path to a 6-2 decision.

Sophomore Will Roberge, like Feola, also appeared in three contests, picking up hits against SUNY Poly and Ursinus while scoring a pair of runs against the former opponent.

Rounding out the cohort are relief pitchers Ryan Rotondo and Dan Kennedy, who both eased into the season by making late-inning appearances out of the bullpen.

Rotondo took to the hill twice, in a 12-5 defeat to Webster on March 11 and a 11-7 victory over Ursinus last Saturday, striking out three against the Bears in two innings of work.

Kennedy, the lone freshman among the group, made his collegiate debut in the seventh inning of the Anchormen’s 19-1 rout of SUNY Poly on March 13, picking up a pair of strikeouts in his stint on the bump.

It was a largely successful journey for the RIC nine, compiling a 7-2 record on the strength of a potent offense, scoring 65 runs over the course of the tour.

The Anchormen start the northern portion of their slate on Tuesday with a visit to cross-town rival Johnson & Wales before welcoming Bridgewater State the next day for their home opener.

Toll Gate alumna Jamie Hopgood is hitting at a .438 clip with a home run and five runs driven in for Endicott, who are currently on a season-opening ten-game trip to Florida...Ex-Hawk Dylan McSparren has scored 11 goals for the Rivier lacrosse team, who remained unbeaten with a 17-7 triumph over Northern Vermont-Lyndon last Wednesday...Hendricken alum Joe Sousa has picked up eight ground balls and won 27 faceoffs for Salve Regina, who picked up their first win of their season on March 10 with a 14-12 upset of Division II school Adams State.
