Hawks take down Eagles in big DI clash

The Bishop Hendricken swim team remained undefeated by rolling to a 62-32 win over defending champion Barrington last week.

It was a statement win for the Hawks, who have come up short against the Eagles the past two seasons at the state championships after boasting a seven-year run of titles. The two teams look to be on a collision course once again as the regular season winds down while North Kingstown remains in the mix.

“It’s a huge win considering the history. We were psyched going into it and we swam our best. We definitely felt some pressure since they were the ones that won last year, so we just came psyched and prepared. It shows that we can do it,” said Hendricken senior Aidan Curry, who has been excited to also take on the leadership role this season along with other standouts including Alex Sulyma, Tristan Jordan and Damon Buchanan.

“It’s been really cool being a leader on the team. Our high school careers really flew by so it’s inspirational to have those guys looking up to you,” Curry said.

Hendricken improved to 6-0 with the victory while Barrington dropped to 3-2 after falling to the Skippers earlier this winter season. NK currently sits in second place in the division with a 4-1 record. The Hawks beat the Skippers 50-44 in their meeting back in January.

Here are some of the results from the Hawks’ big win:

Sulyma, Curry, Jordan and Noah Worth won the 200 medley relay, and then Buchanan took first in the 200 freestyle. Jordan won the 50 freestyle and 100 fly for the Hawks.

Sulyma later won the back stroke, followed by Curry who won the breast stroke. Sulyma, Andrews, Buchanan and Jordan combined to win the 400 free relay for the Hawks.

Andrews placed second in the 200 free while Sulyma took second in the individual medley. Ryan Voccio took second in the 100 fly while Curry placed second in the 100 free. Buchanan also finished second in the 500 free.

Curry, Andrews, Buchanan and Worth finished second in the 200 free relay. Marco Ialongo placed second in the breast stroke, while Worth, Ialongo, Voccio and Rocco Czaja finished second in the 400 free relay.
