Dispute between school committee members 'resolved,' says Bachus

Personal differences between two members of the School Committee that elevated to the point where the police were called and a temporary restraining order was issued against one of the parties has raised the question whether the committee can operate.

However, Committee Chair Karen Bachus said Tuesday that won’t be a problem because the issue between her and member Judith Cobden is divorced of the committee’s work and, besides, “the matter has been resolved.” She said the restraining order would be lifted today in court. The committee is scheduled to meet tonight.

While Bachus described the situation as a “private matter,” she said that Cobden had been staying in the house she owns at 35 Van Zandt Ave. She emphasized that Cobden was not a paying tenant.

“She did not pay me a dime.”

According to a police report, police responded to the address on Sept. 19 at about 8 p.m. due to a complaint from Cobden that “the landlord threw her items outside” and that she was being harassed by a friend she was staying with.

The officer filing the report concludes it was an “ex-relationship that became toxic.”

Cobden obtained the temporary restraining order on Sept. 23.

In a voice message Tuesday afternoon, Cobden said the matter is, "A non issue now...it's over." She said the TRO expires Oct. 3 and she and Bachus "agreed to put our differences aside." She said the issue does not affect her commitment to Warwick schools or her ability to serve on the committee.

Committee meetings are held on Zoom and Bachus could not say whether the restraining order would legally impair tonight’s meeting should the matter not be settled.

Andrew Henneous, legal counsel for the committee, could not be reached for comment.
