Falcons work past Toll Gate, 7-4

The Cranston West boys hockey club topped visiting Toll Gate 7-4 last week thanks to a big third period in which the Falcons netted four goals.

Tied 3-3 heading into the final 15 minutes, West would get goals from Cam Koretsky, Jaycob Hargreaves, Jack Drohen and Dylan Demers to put the game out of reach and secure the win.

“It was one of those things that since we are the new kid in town, we are going to get everyone’s best game. Toll Gate only has one win but I told the kids before the game that this game was going to be different … we are going to have everyone gunning for us and trying to prove that they can play with us,” said West coach Matt Brannon. “It was 3-3 going into the third period so they gave us everything that we could handle. There are no nights off, that’s for sure. The kids are working hard and that’s all you can ask for. It’s good to see them put in different situations, it’s good to see if they can come together and win.”

The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to two goals from Hargreaves. However, the Titans would get a trio of goals from Ezra Cox, Max Savaria and Max Grossguth while West’s Nathan Baldini scored to tie the score at 3-3 after two periods.

Matt Carr scored Toll Gate’s lone goal in the final period.

The Falcons improved to 6-2 with the win and currently sit at 7-2 overall, while Toll Gate sits at 1-6.

After a rocky start to the season, the Falcons have strung together a nice streak as of late in their return season to Division II after making the move from Division I this offseason.

“Our kids got a wake up call the first game of the season against Ponaganset. I think the kids’ expectation was that since we moved down from Division I that it was going to be easy for us, but Ponaganset beat us 7-0 on opening night. It was actually good, it was a wake-up call for the kids and they realized that in this division, you can’t take any nights off. After that, it has been a good turnaround,” said Brannon.

Brannon has also enjoyed seeing the Falcons go up against a variety of situations, and hopes that it will prepare them for the playoffs.

“We’ve had some close games and we’ve had some blowouts. We’re just trying to find some consistency and build some chemistry and move forward for the playoffs,” said Brannon. “We should be able to get a top-4 seed for the playoffs at this point, but you just need to get game experience each week and move forward. You need to take something out of each game and make the kids understand what our ultimate goal is which is to be playing at Brown in March for the state championship.”
