Bob Grant has written a timely, but troubling, commentary on the status of the Warwick Public School System.(“School presentation a good start, yet so many questions”, Dec. 14)
In his letter, Mr. Grant cites some shocking statistics regarding abysmal student test scores and alarming rates of absenteeism. These numbers indicate the Warwick Public Schools are failing in their mission to educate our young people.
Grant asks about the “root causes” of Warwick parents choosing home schooling and other educational options for their children. Whatever the specific reasons, this trend suggests increasing dissatisfaction with what is being offered in the Warwick Public Schools.
Mr. Grant also asks, quite appropriately, about “the measurable expectations of the new curriculum implementations”. That is to say, is there any reason to think the new curriculum will be any better than the old curriculum?
Recall the ridiculous “open classroom” concept introduced in the 1970’s. Did it prove to be superior to the traditional classroom learning of the 1950’s? Of course not. It was just another educational fad that eventually fizzled out.
I challenge Superintendent Dambruch to offer us proof positive that her new curriculum initiatives will result in better educated students. I would also ask her to explain how implementing dreadful diversity, equity, and inclusion ideology promotes academic excellence? I’m certain John Howell would gladly print her response.
Lastly, I would encourage Bob Grant to keep asking his thoughtful questions. They deserve answers.
