The public is invited to attend a memorial service at the 9-11 Memorial Garden at the Oakland Beach Commons in Warwick to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

“On this, the 20th anniversary, we still feel the sting from the events of 9/11,” said Representative Camille Vella-Wilkinson who with Rep. Joseph Solomon Jr., D-Dist. 22) has helped plan the event. “Events such as these serve to bring us closer together as we honor those who fell; and it reminds us of the work we still need to do to combat terrorism around the globe,” she said.

The 9-11 memorial built by members of the community to remember the Warwick victims of the attack is located at the easterly end of the seawall parking lot in an area shaded by willow trees and removed from the hubbub of the beach.

The event, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11, will begin at 10:28 a.m. to commemorate the time when the second tower collapsed. The Bishop Hendricken High School Chorus has been invited to sing a musical selection. Father Robert Marciano, pastor of St. Kevin Church and president of Bishop Hendricken High School will give the invocation and benediction. Warwick Mayor Frank J. Picozzi will speak along with Scott Avedisian, who served as mayor at the time of the terrorist attack. They will present a memorial wreath. Judy Cobden, chairwoman of the Warwick School Committee — a 9-11 Ground Zero survivor — will also offer a few words.

For the health and safety of all, participants are strongly encouraged to wear a mask.
