Reversing a decision made just two months ago, the CDC recommended Tuesday that both unvaccinated and vaccinated people should return to wearing masks indoors and in public areas, schools included.
According to Cathy Bonang, secretary to the Superintendent, Lynn Dambruch and Assistant Superintendent William McCaffrey met with Governor Dan McKee yesterday afternoon to discuss the mask mandates for the fall.
As of press time, it was unknown whether the decision for students and teachers to mask up will come from the school department, or from the state.
In data released from the Department of Health found on the department’s website, COVID cases among students since September 2020 have remained fairly low. The data was updated on July 21, 2021 and includes positive cases as of July 17.
The Warwick Area Career and Tech Center, WELC at John Brown Francis, and Scott Elementary School, have all had fewer than 5 cases.
Greenwood, Lippitt, and Oakland Beach Elementary Schools reported between 5 and 9 cases.
Hoxsie, Robertson, Wyman, Norwood, Park, Sherman, and Warwick Neck Elementary Schools have all had between 10 and 14 cases.
Cedar Hill and Holliman Elementary Schools, as well as Winman Middle School, have had between 15 and 19 cases. Pilgrim High School has reported 25 to 29 cases, Warwick Veterans Middle School has reported between 30 and 34 cases, and Toll Gate High School has reported 40 to 44 cases.
For faculty members, the cases have been even lower, with all schools, except Warwick Veterans Middle School, reporting fewer than 10 cases. Warwick Vets reported more than 15 cases among teachers and staff.
