DUI

On Feb. 7 just before 8 p.m., Officer Brian W. Fontaine reports responding to the intersection of Post and Airport roads for a report of an impaired driver. Dispatch indicated the vehicle had been observed speeding and swerving between lanes.

Fontaine was in a marked cruiser at Hoxsie Four Corners when the call came in. He pulled into the Speedway on Airport Road when he observed a vehicle with Wisconsin registration traveling east on Airport Road.

Fontaine reports he pulled behind the vehicle at a stoplight and then followed it eastbound onto West Shore Road, where he observed it cross over the right fog line three times. A motor vehicle stop was initiated near the intersection of West Shore Road and Glenwood Avenue. The officer reports the vehicle’s passenger side tires both struck the curb when it pulled over.

Upon making contact with the operator, Fontaine reports that he detected a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” emanating from the man’s breath. The operator is also said to have had “severely bloodshot, watery eyes and a very red face.”

The operator reportedly told Fontaine he was traveling from a bar to a friend’s house. His speech was “very slurred and almost not understandable,” according to the officer’s report.

The operator reportedly had difficulty standing upon exiting the vehicle. Fontaine reports that field sobriety testing was initiated but then terminated for the operator’s safety.

Robert Rogers, 59, of 1611 Moline St., Stoughton, Wisconsin, was arrested on a charge of suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Rogers was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was also cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and laned roadway violations.

Officer Aaron L. Steere reports that while traveling north on Elmwood Avenue at approximately 11:31 p.m. on Feb. 9, he observed a vehicle make a right turn onto the road from Pawtuxet Avenue. The vehicle “crossed over both northbound lanes of travel over the double yellow line and into the southbound lanes before correcting itself back into the northbound lanes,” the officer reports.

Steere followed and observed the vehicle. He reports that it was weaving between the northbound lanes and traveling at approximately 15 mph, well below the posted speed limit. The vehicle’s right directional signal remained activated for roughly a quarter-mile, and upon reaching the Post Road intersection, it reportedly made a right turn after activating its left directional signal.

Steere initiated a motor vehicle stop, although the vehicle traveled over a curb and came to complete halt in the parking lot of Cosmic Pizza rather than within the roadway.

The officer reports that the vehicle’s operator “appeared visibly intoxicated” with bloodshot, watery eyes. An odor of alcohol is said to have emanated from the vehicle, and the operator had just lit a cigarette, with Steere’s report states is often done in an attempt to mask the odor.

The operator reportedly told Steere he was traveling home after visiting his girlfriend’s house. He is also said to have acknowledged drinking alcohol that evening but denied being impaired.

The operator is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing. Steere reports that the operator had difficulty maintaining his balance and failed the testing.

John F. Caron, 44, of 2483 West Shore Road, Warwick, was arrested on a charge of suspicion of driving under the influence. He was transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where a chemical breath test reportedly found his blood alcohol content to be significantly above the legal limit for driving.

Caron was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally issued a municipal summons for a laned roadway violation.

On Feb. 16 at approximately 5 a.m., Officer Randy S. Bell reports responding to the Radisson Hotel on Post Road for a report of tires and rims being stolen from a vehicle.

Upon arriving at the scene, Bell observed a 2019 Lexus ES300H with Massachusetts registration sitting atop milk crates with all four tires and rims missing. The hotel’s front desk reported the theft was believed to have occurred between 11 p.m. the previous night and 5 a.m. that morning.

Bell contacted the operator of the vehicle to inform him of the incident. The hotel advised that there are no cameras in the rear of the building that would have captured the theft.
