Typhoid Mary give the ears more than enough with ‘Second Breakfast’

There’s an abundance of punk rock bands in the music scene around Providence and Rhode Island as a whole. Some of them unleash an aggressive hardcore essence, while others incorporate an upbeat pop vibe and a few incorporate abstract stylings akin to bands like Fugazi and Black Flag. For Typhoid Mary, they have a sound that embraces the late ‘70s era that spawned legendary acts like the Ramones, the Sex Pistols and the Damned. This is evident in their sophomore studio record “Second Breakfast”, which was self-released by the band on January 5. The quality of the album is pretty good while providing an intense and amplified listening experience.

Adam Allard from the Burlington, Vermont punks River City Rebels handled the recording while vocalist & guitarist Izzy De Simone, bassist Marc Coutu and drummer Eddie Emerson did everything else. Couto and Emerson also contributed backing vocals with the end result being seven hard-hitting songs that exude observant storytelling and existential commentary. “Second Breakfast” provides a sonic barrage with De Simone’s singing & riffs both having a major presence. The rhythmic foundation courtesy of Coutu and Emerson can’t be overlooked either, it holds all the elements together in cohesive fashion. This is the kind of music that turns back the clock with a modern approach, which is a characteristic I genuinely enjoy.

“Asymptomatic” has that cohesiveness I previously highlighted with it being taken to a new level. Ranging from the instrumentation to the joint vocals in the chorus, it’s bound to impact the senses with serious emphasis. An example of the storytelling I mentioned earlier is “Linda Lantini” with the character the track centers upon sounding like a total mess. With this being said, a person who hits up the liquor store on a regular basis and smokes two packs of cigs on the daily must be interesting enough to write a song about, right? “Freak Show”, “Bring It Back” and “Going, Going, Gone!” are other songs off of “Second Breakfast” that are absolutely worth listening to, but I encourage anyone who dives into the album to do so from start to finish.

To do exactly that, log onto Typhoid Mary’s Bandcamp page www.typh0idmary.bandcamp.com. If you’re more of a user of Spotify, Apple Music and Youtube Music, “Second Breakfast” is available for listening on those platforms as well. It should also be mentioned that De Simone, Coutu and Emerson recently brought guitarist Jim Moorehead into the fold to fill out their musical approach. To see when you can experience said approach in a live setting, follow their Facebook page and give it a like at www.facebook.com/Typh0idM4ry. Before you do so, listen to the new album and let it rip.
