Warwick Neck residents, along with members of the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Homeland Security, Warwick Fire Department and students from Warwick Neck School joined by veterans, held a Veterans Day observance Thursday at Warwick Lighthouse. This is the second year of the observance organized by Jack Henriques and Ann Gooding, president of the Warwick Neck Improvement Association. Former mayor and Supreme Court Justice Francis X. Flaherty, who is a Vietnam War veteran, spoke about the history of Veterans Day and Memorial Day, the two days set aside to honor veterans. Whether they were in battle, served at home during conflict or during peacetime, Flaherty said veterans view themselves as “equals,” as they all did what was asked of them for our country. He was critical of how the two days of observance have become commercialized with sales, adding, “It is important that we do recognize them [veterans] like this.” Also speaking were Thalia Wood, Social Studies department head at Toll Gate, and Toll Gate junior Rebecca Carcieri. They described their research into the life of Warwick resident Sgt. Donald Rubery, who died in World War II soon after landing of the beaches of Normandy. The Warwick Neck Chorale provided musical presentations. Principal Patricia Cousineau gave greetings on behalf of the school and students.
