Henricken teacher and coach Bill Johnston has never served in the military, but his grandfather and granduncles did. Knowing what they did, he wanted to do something to show his appreciation for those who defend our freedoms. Last year, Johnston held the first pancake breakfast at the school, not only providing a meal for veterans but also collecting funds and donations of items to be sent to military personnel who would be deployed overseas during the holiday. The breakfast was a success, with the collection of more than $2,000 and boxes of items for Operation Holiday Cheer. The funds also go to help the work of SABER, Student Advocates of Blessed Edmund Rice. SABER, a group of Hendricken students, aims to solve problems through advocacy and to educate the community on how the community can better treat veterans. On Friday, Johnston organized the second annual pancake breakfast. The soccer team volunteered to help, serving up the pancakes, busing tables and greeting people. An aim of the breakfast, Johnston said, is to emphasize to veterans, “You can never be forgotten.”

Always a great job done by the good people at Hendricken. Met some great vets (even though they are Navy guys).
What a nice time. If you missed it, check it out next year. Great pancakes, 50/50 drawing, you can even stand for our National Anthem!. Short , sweet and fun.
