Winston A. “Wayne” Cogswell

Winston A. “Wayne” Cogswell, 93, of Warwick, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at Hope Hospice. He leaves his loving wife of 38 years, Claire E. (Charles) Cogswell.

Born in Easton, Maine, he moved to Rhode Island and joined the Merchant Marines in December 1944 at age 17. He later transferred to the Coast Guard, serving from January through July in 1945, and then joined the US Army, serving from February to November 1946. He met his first wife, Dolores. They had four daughters and moved to Memphis, TN. Shortly after, he met Sam Phillips at Sun Records and started his musical career. He wrote and recorded many songs that hit the charts.

He returned to Rhode Island and opened his recording studio, WYE Records. He achieved a #1 record, “Night Theme.” He and Dolores divorced. He met Claire in Warwick at his studio as a singer and recording artist. They married, stayed in Warwick, and continued with their music. Music was always a part of Winston’s life, and he often performed for free to bring joy to everyone. He was a “Hall of Famer” with Sun Record, and in 2014 was inducted to the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame.

In addition to his wife, Claire, he is survived by his daughters, Jennifer, Darlene, Wanda and Robin; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sister Louise; and his beloved dog, “Rebel.” He was predeceased by two siblings, Larry and Lorna.

His burial will be private.
