WCA 11's headed to finals

The Warwick Continental American 11-year-old All-Star team edged Coventry 7-3 to punch its ticket to the District 3 finals against North Kingstown/Wickford tonight at home.

Tied 2-2 after three innings of play, WCA’s bats would take off in the fourth as it scored three runs to push the score to 5-2, and then would add two more insurance runs in the sixth to set the score to 7-3 and wrap up the win.

Mason Broomfield got the start on the mound for WCA, pitching four innings and collecting eight strikeouts. Nick Stevens pitched two innings in relief and added two strikeouts.

Charlie Brown led WCA at the plate with two hits and an RBI, along with Michael Blair, who also added a pair of hits and an RBI. Anthony Burt and Joey Riviera also added RBI in the win.

WCA manager Jamie Luisi expects a tough battle in the final, despite his club already cruising to a 9-2 win over NK/Wickford early in the tournament.

“North Kingstown/Wickford is a very good, sound baseball team. Last year they came here and beat us but then we took the second game. They’re a very good team, but our team has been playing well also. We’ve been playing really good defense, getting guys on base, running the bases well, pitching well, and scoring runs as a team. It’s been great,” said Luisi.

WCA has been considered the favorite since the start of the tournament, and has proven to be a force by outscoring opponents 28-5 through the first three games. Although WCA has an opportunity to close things out on Thursday, Luisi and company are staying focused on the task at hand.

“You never know, it’s baseball and these kids are 10, 11 years old. You can’t go into any game and take it lightly, and we just need to keep playing the way we have these past few games. That’s my perspective and that’s been my message to the team. You need to keep working hard and you can’t take anything for granted,” said Luisi. “It should be a great game, and we’re going into it hoping to end it (on Thursday). If not, then I guess the ‘if’ game will be on Saturday. We’re taking it one game at a time and trying to get the boys ready.”

Playing as a team has been the key to success, according the Luisi.

“I talk to them every day, they practice a lot, they’ve just been playing a lot of baseball. We had a big run last year and we have most of those guys back. The team chemistry is there, they’ve been playing great team baseball. We just need to keep them in the right direction and hope they keep that energy.”
