DUI

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. on March 20, Officer Anthony D’Abrosca responded to the area of The Islander restaurant on West Shore Road for a report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries.

At the scene, D’Abrosca found that both of the vehicles involved had been moved into a nearby parking lot. Both of the operators had been checked and cleared of injuries by rescue personnel.

D’Abrosca made contact with one of the operators, who had been driving a 2008 Dodge. The operator told the officer he had been pulling onto West Shore Road when his vehicle collided with another vehicle that was turning into a parking lot.

D’Abrosca reports detecting the odor of alcohol on the man’s breath, and that the man “was unsteady on his feet.” The man is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol that evening. The sole passenger in the Dodge, a woman, also had a “strong presence of an alcoholic beverage emanating from her breath,” the officer reports.

The operator of the Dodge is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

John Conley, 63, 748 Washington St., Apt. 2, Coventry, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, he is said to have agreed to chemical breath tests, which reportedly found his blood alcohol content to be significantly above the legal limit.

Conley was later released into the custody of a sober adult with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for failure to yield.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. on March 22, Officer Nathaniel Gray was conducting a patrol at the Warwick Mall when he observed a 2013 Honda Accord partially mounted on a grassy median strip.

Gray checked on the vehicle, which was running, and made contact with its male occupant, who was in the driver’s seat. The vehicle’s radio was playing music loudly, the officer reports, and the occupant had to be asked “multiple times” to turn both the radio and the vehicle off.

According to Gray, the occupant of the vehicle was “unable to explain” how it ended up partially mounted on the median.

“I could immediately detect a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle,” Gray reports. “I observed the operator to have watery/bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech.”

The vehicle’s occupant is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that night and agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Devin Arthur Ming, 19, Franklin, Massachusetts, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Ming was later released into the custody of his parents with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test.

LARCENY

At approximately 8 a.m. on March 24, Officer Bruce Law met with a woman in the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters regarding a larceny complaint.

The woman told Law that sometime between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. on March 23, a Craftsman snowblower was taken from her property. She also said a suspicious man had been observed walking up and down the street earlier that day, looking at homes and driveways.

The woman was unable to provide a serial number for the snowblower, and no security camera footage was immediately available. The matter was documented.

SHOPLIFTING

Just before 7 p.m. on March 27, Officer Sara Goes and other officers responded to a report of a shoplifting incident in progress at the Warwick Mall Macy’s. Dispatch advised the male suspect had entered a 2013 Honda Accord with Pennsylvania registration plates, which had last been seen near the JCPenney.

At the scene, one of the officers located the suspect vehicle in the Target parking lot. Shortly thereafter, the suspect was observed walking back to the vehicle.

Goes went to that location, where the other officer was speaking with the suspect. The suspect reportedly told officers he had gone to Macy’s to exchange a jacket, but was denied by an employee because he did not have a receipt.

He is said to have told the officers he then selected another jacket, removed its security tag and left the store without paying, thinking it “was okay because he left the ‘other jacket’ that he wanted to exchange,” Goes’s report reads.

Other officers, meanwhile, had gone inside Macy’s to review security camera footage, which reportedly showed the suspect entering the store “with nothing in his hands,” removing security devices from two jackets, and exiting the store with one of the jackets and without making any attempt to pay.

According to Macy’s employees, the jacket left behind by the suspect was damaged when its security tag was removed. Each of the jackets was valued at $225.

Jose S. Munoz, 18, 68 Ethan St., Providence, was arrested on charges of shoplifting and unlawful use/removal of a theft detection device. He was transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing and later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

Shortly after 11 a.m. on March 24, Officer Matthew Caradimos responded to the Target store at the Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress. Dispatch advised that according to loss prevention, the person involved was a “known suspect in previous shopliftings.”

Caradimos received a description of the suspect and waited outside the store. Shortly thereafter, a person matching the suspect’s description exited the store, at which point he was detained by the officer.

A search of the man reportedly uncovered external hard drives, printing equipment and a tool used to remove magnetic security locks from merchandise. Target later place the combined value of the stolen items at $532.36.

Records check also showed the man had multiple prior shoplifting convictions, two active bench warrants issued from Sixth Division District Court, as well as an active arrest warrant issued from Seekonk, Massachusetts.

Justin Mikal Westley, 40, 160 Broad St., Providence, was arrested on charges of shoplifting and shoplifting/implements of concealments and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was held as a probation violator pending a court appearance.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

At approximately 9:19 p.m. on March 24, Officer Timothy Lipka was traveling on Post Road when he observed a Honda Accord with “illegal sunscreen tint” pull out of the Hampton Inn parking lot.

Lipka followed the vehicle onto the Airport Connector, initiated a stop and made contact with the female operator, who is said to have initially provided him with false identification. Once she provided the correct identification information, a records check reportedly found her to have a suspended license and two previous convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Amalys Matos, 26, 356 High St., Cumberland, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.
