Warwick North captures district title

Amelia Murphy pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and led the Warwick North 11/12-year-old all-stars to the District 3 title, beating Coventry, 4-1, at the Bend Street Complex on Wednesday evening.

Murphy was also impressive at the plate, finishing with three hits, an RBI and a run scored.

“Amelia is an unbelievable player,” Warwick North manager Alicia Bordeleau said. “She’s a fantastic pitcher and an awesome shortstop too. She’s just an athlete, she’s great.”

According to Bordeleau, earlier in the playoffs, Murphy needed just 36 pitches in one game to earn a win.

“Amelia was on fire that night,” Bordeleau explained. “The game ended in four innings, a no-hitter, nobody could touch her.”

Not only has the pitching been solid, the bats have come alive too.

“They’ve been hitting,” Bordeleau said. “They’ve been doing really well on offense. I’m super proud of them. A great group of kids.”

Coventry’s Melanie Lowder led off the top of the first inning with a single to shallow right field. However, Lowder was thrown out trying to steal second when the catcher, Warwick’s Vinessa Perenti, threw a rocket to second base. Murphy punched out Abby Choquette after that. Elyse Saccoccio hit a two-out triple to right next. Then, Baleigh Tuchon laced an RBI single to center to give Coventry a 1-0 edge. After that, Murphy fanned Emily Cronin to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the third, Warwick North got it back and then some. Jenni Altieri, Katie Motta and Murphy all hit singles to load the bases. Then, Alayna Medina worked a walk and a run came in, knotting the game at 1. With the bases reloaded, Sydney Suffoletto drove in the runner from third, giving Warwick a 2-1 edge. Sophia Stogner followed it with a walk. With the bases loaded again, Murphy scored from third on a ball in the dirt to put Warwick up 3-1.

Murphy retired the side in order in the top of the fourth, behind two strikeouts and a ground out. In the bottom of the inning, Murphy hit a one-out RBI single to drive in Madison Wrench while giving Warwick a 4-1 edge.

Murphy started the top of the fifth with back-to-back strikeouts on Diamond Gentile and Angelina Dillon before getting Lowder to line out.

In the top of the sixth, Murphy gave up a one-out single to Saccoccio. Other than that hiccup, Murphy was sensational. The flamethrower got Tuchon to pop out before striking out Cronin to end the ball game.

Warwick moved on to the state tournament, which it is hosting at Bend Street.
