FATAL CRASH

A 19-year-old city resident is facing charges following a early-morning motor vehicle crash in which another 19-year-old was killed and two other people were seriously hurt.

Jacob M. Pelliccio, of Medford Street, is charged with driving to endanger resulting in death, driving to endanger resulting in personal injury, driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a chemical test, according to Warwick Police.

Pelliccio was arraigned Tuesday in Third Division District Court and released on $10,000 surety bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 25.

According to police, officers responded to the area of 5880 Post Road at approximately 3:49 a.m. on Oct. 25 for a report of a single-vehicle crash. At the scene, Warwick officers made contact with North Kingstown Police personnel, who had received the original call.

Police say an initial investigation found a 2003 Buick Park Avenue operated by Pelliccio left the roadway while traveling south and struck an abutment on the bridge carrying Post Road over the Hunt River.

Michaela Lynch, 19, of Warwick was transported to Kent Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. Two other male passengers, ages 21 and 19, were hospitalized with serious injuries, according to police.

Pelliccio was also hospitalized with serious injuries following the crash.

“Members of the Warwick Police Accident Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene of the crash and have begun an investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding the crash,” a release from Warwick Police reads. “As a result of this preliminary investigation both speed, alcohol and/or drugs are believed to be possible factors in the crash on the part of the vehicle’s driver.”

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact Officer Jacob Elderkin of the Warwick Police Traffic Unit at (401) 468-4335.

DUI

At approximately 11:20 p.m. on Oct. 10, Sgt. Stephen Major was traveling in a marked patrol unit in the area of Post Road and Airport Road when he observed a “white motor vehicle with its high intensity beams illuminated, blinding me and other operators on the roadway.”

Major said he attempted a “courtesy flashing of the headlights, commonly known to advise others that their high beams are on.” The white vehicle, however, “ignored that courtesy and turned left onto Airport Road Eastbound, still with the high intensity beams illuminated.”

Major followed the vehicle and observed as it “faded right into an already occupied right hand lane, straddling the white staggered lines separating the travel lanes and then almost striking a white van within that lane of travel.” The vehicle then “faded to the left of the double yellow lines (both driver’s side tires) into oncoming traffic,” the sergeant reports.

At that point, Major initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the female operator, who is said to have exhibited “bloodshot and watery eyes” and had difficulty focusing. The sergeant also reports detecting the odor of alcohol on the woman’s breath.

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that night and refused to undergo field sobriety testing.

Christine L. Prefontaine, 50, 110 Wakefield St., Apt. 1L, West Warwick, was then arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, she is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Prefontaine was later transported to a local hospital for detox. She was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on charges of driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a chemical test, second offense. She was additionally cited for use of multiple lamps, laned roadway violations and leaving the lane of travel. ***

At approximately 2:15 a.m. on Oct. 11, Officer Gian Micheletti was conducting a fixed traffic post on Warwick Avenue when he observed a northbound 2010 Honda without its headlights or taillights illuminated. The vehicle’s “very dim fog lights” were activated, the officer reports.

Micheletti followed the vehicle as headed toward Atlantic Avenue and observed it was “swerving back and forth” within the lane of travel.

Micheletti initiated a motor vehicle stop near the intersection of Warwick and Atlantic avenues and made contact with the female operator. He reports detecting a “moderately strong odor of alcoholic beverage” on the woman’s breath, and observed her eyes to be “moderately bloodshot and watery.”

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that night and agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

Vera Gribov, 60, 21 Spring St., Apt. 4E, Manville, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, she is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Gribov was later transported to Kent Hospital for detox. She was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence and cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test.

LARCENY

At approximately 4 p.m. on Oct. 9, Officer Derek Hagopian responded to a Beatrice Avenue home for a report of larceny.

At the scene, the reporting party told Hagopian he had purchased a Dewalt car buffer online for $72.58 on June 20. On Aug. 19, the reporting party received notification from the U.S. Postal Service that the package had been delivered to his front door. The package had never arrived, however, and the reporting party believes it was “stolen from his front doorstep after being shipped.”

No security camera footage was available. The matter was documented. ***

At approximately 2:40 p.m. on Oct. 19, Officer Bruce Law responded to Collen Haxton’s Liquors on Post Road for a report of a vehicle stolen from the parking lot. Dispatch subsequently advised the vehicle, a 2009 Toyota Camry with Massachusetts plates, had been observing leaving the area and entering Route 37 west toward Cranston.

At the scene, Law met with the owner of the vehicle, he said he had left it running with the window open while he went inside the liquor store. When he returned, the vehicle was being driven out of the parking lot.

A review of security camera footage from the store showed a man “exit the store and wander around the parking lot for a short time” before entering the vehicle in question and leaving the scene.

By that time, the vehicle’s owner had contacted his son, who used an iPhone tracking feature to put the vehicle’s location at Elmwood Avenue in Cranston. Shortly thereafter, a Rhode Island State Police trooper stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Hamlin Street and Elmwood Avenue in Cranston and detained its operator. That man was then transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where Law identified him as the suspect based on his review of security camera footage.

The matter was documented.

At the scene, a loss prevention officer at the store told Pina he had observed the suspect place four items from the stationary section into her purse. The suspect is said to have then proceeded to a self-checkout line and scanned items in her cart, but not what she had put into the purse. The suspect then exited the store, at which point she was met by store personnel and escorted to the loss prevention office.

According to the loss prevention officer, 18 items with a total value of roughly $125 were recovered from the woman’s purse.
