DUI

At approximately 11:53 p.m. on June 1, Officer Paris Norwood responded to the Cumberland Farms at 1291 Warwick Ave. for a report of an intoxicated person.

Dispatch initially advised that a “highly intoxicated” man was said to be sitting near the air pumps outside his 2010 Honda in the store’s parking lot. While en route, Norwood was advised the man had entered the driver’s seat of his vehicle, which was being blocked in by the reporting party.

Arriving at the scene, Norwood observed the Honda and the reporting party’s vehicle blocking it from leaving. Norwood reports he exited his cruiser and approached the vehicles, at which point the reporting party moved his vehicle upon. The allegedly intoxicated driver then put his vehicle in reverse and began moving in Norwood’s direction, the officer reports, only stopping after Norwood shouted and struck the vehicle’s trunk with his palm.

Norwood then made contact with the operator, who reportedly had “bloodshot, watery eyes and a flushed face.” The officer also reports detecting a “strong odor of alcoholic beverage” on the man’s breath and states the man was “unable to make any coherent responses to my instructions.”

Norwood reports the operator acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that night and refused to submit to field sobriety testing.

At that point, Michael Patrick McVey, 58, 115 Lyndon Road, Cranston, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

McVey was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence and released into the custody of a sober relative. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test.
