DUI

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on April 6, Officer William Holz was assisting with traffic at the scene of a serious motor vehicle accident on Post Road when he observed a vehicle traveling toward his location at a slow rate of speed.

The vehicle stopped near the entrance to the Cumberland Farms at 3335 Post Road and the male operator rolled down his window. Holz made contact with the operator to ask where he was going, and he observed the man – who reportedly identified himself as a captain in the North Providence Fire Department – to have “moderately bloodshot, watery eyes.” He also detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from inside the vehicle.

Holz instructed the operator to pull into the Cumberland Farms parking lot. The man is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol that day and refused to submit to field sobriety testing. The officer also reports an open container of White Claw hard seltzer was subsequently found in the center console cup holder of the man’s vehicle.

Robert K. Bell, 51, 280 Long St., Warwick, was arrested on a charge of suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Bell was later transported to Kent Hospital for detox and issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and presence of an alcoholic beverage while operating or riding in a motor vehicle.

VANDALISM

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. on April 7, Officer Derek Hagopian responded to the parking lot of the Cumberland Farms at 1556 Post Road for a report of malicious damage to a vehicle in connection with a road rage incident on Irving Road. Dispatch advised that according to the reporting party, the windshield of his 2008 Ford Focus was smashed by an unknown subject who then fled the scene.

At the scene, the reporting party told Hagopian he had been driving on Irving Road when he became involved in a verbal altercation with three men occupying another vehicle, described as a black SUV. One of the men is said to have picked up a piece of wood from the side of the road and used it to strike the Ford’s windshield.

The matter was documented.

ARSON

At approximately 4:15 p.m. on April 8, Officer Kyle Palmer and other officers responded to the scene of a fire on Atkins Street. Dispatch advised that a group of four or five juveniles had started a small brush fire in the woods.

At the scene, Palmer spoke with witnesses in an effort to identify the juveniles involved. A search of the area was unsuccessful.

Palmer then spoke with a nearby resident who said four juveniles had been involved. The resident said he had observed the juveniles smoking cigarettes in the woods, and that approximately five minutes after he saw them leave, he noticed the fire and contacted authorities.

The property was found to belong to St. Rose & Clement Parish, which was contacted regarding the incident. The matter was documented.
