Police Log - 10/22/19

DUI

Shortly after 1 a.m. on Oct. 12, Officer Steven D. Moretti and two other officers were at the scene of a previous motor vehicle accident in the area of 400 East Ave. awaiting the arrival of a traffic officer.

The traffic officer arrived and parked his vehicle in a safe location with its emergency lights activated. Then, a gray vehicle traveling west on East Avenue “crossed over the white dashed lines and sideswiped the marked police cruiser on the driver’s side,” according to Moretti. The cruiser was unoccupied at the time.

The gray vehicle continued westbound without making any attempt to stop, according to Moretti. He pursued the vehicle down East Avenue and onto Bald Hill Road and was able to initiate a motor vehicle stop in the Chuck E. Cheese parking lot. He observed damage to the vehicle’s passenger-side mirror consistent with the collision with the cruiser.

Moretti made contact with the vehicle’s operator and “immediately detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle.” The operator is said to have slurred her speech and had bloodshot, watery eyes.

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol that night and agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

Sarah Steere, 28, 23 Chopmist Hill Road, Glocester, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, she is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Martin reports that an inventory of Steere’s vehicle uncovered 0.2 grams of marijuana.

Steere was later issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence and transported to Kent Hospital for detox. She was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test, a laned roadway violation, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of marijuana, one ounce or less.

B&E

Just before 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 12, Officer Zachary J. Black and other officers responded to the John Wickes School at 50 Child Lane for a report of a burglary in progress. Dispatch advised that three individuals with hoods had been seen inside the building and a motion alarm had been activated.

Dispatch then advised that the three male suspects had been observed running out the front door of the school and were detained by another officer outside the building.

Officers subsequently found the three individuals appeared to have gained entrance to the building through a broken window on the south side.

Black spoke with one of the individuals, who advised he and the two other men had met on Instagram and connected over their shared hobby of “taking photos of abandoned schools, churches and any other abandoned things.” The man told Black they had gained access through “one of the many broken windows.”

“He advised me he drove from Pennsylvania to Warwick … because someone told him that it was cool,” Black reports.

Thomas Francis Digilio, 25, Essington, Pennsylvania; Tyler Petrides, 25, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Brandon M. Thomas II, 21, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were each arrested on a charge of breaking and entering into a building at night and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing.

LARCENY

At approximately 8:54 p.m. on Oct. 9, Officer Frank J. Montanaro met with a person in the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters regarding a reported larceny.

The reporting party told Montanaro she had been staying at the Homewood Suites at 33 International Way while her house underwent renovations. She said she parked her vehicle at Homewood Suites at approximately 6 p.m. on Oct. 6, and when she returned at approximately 2 a.m. on Oct. 7, she found the vehicle had been “ransacked.”

The vehicle had been unlocked and there was no damage, but a gold necklace valued at $4,000, an iPhone 6S and a car cleaning kit valued at $23.88 were missing. The matter was forwarded to detectives.

VANDALISM

At approximately 8:11 p.m. on Oct. 11, Officer Justin N. Martin responded to the Smokey Bones location at 31 Universal Blvd. for a report of malicious damage to the window of a motor vehicle.

At the scene, the reporting party told Martin that she had parked her 2018 Toyota Camry and gone into the restaurant at approximately 7:20 p.m. Roughly 30 minutes later, the restaurant’s manager asked her if she owned a Toyota Camry and indicated the vehicle’s window had been broken. She then went outside to the vehicle and found it’s front passenger-side window was broken. The glove box had been rummaged through but it did not appear any items were missing.

No security camera footage was available, and there were no witnesses. The matter was documented for insurance purposes.

Just after 12 p.m. on Oct. 12, Officer Thomas W. Green responded to the Walmart at 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of malicious damage. Dispatch advised that a gray Dodge Journey had been keyed.

At the scene, Green located the vehicle and made contact with its owner, who indicated she had arrived at the store at approximately 11 a.m. and noticed the damage when she returned to the vehicle. Green observed damage to the rear passenger-side door, consisting of scratches that “appeared to almost be the letter ‘H’ in shape.”

A review of security camera footage showed a possible suspect, who was operating a Hyundai Accent. The footage did not appear to capture the damage being done, however.

The matter was forwarded to detectives.

SHOPLIFTING

Just after 1 p.m. on Oct. 8, Officer Thomas W. Greene responded to the Macy’s location at Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress. While he was en route, dispatch advised that the male suspect – who was said to have taken women’s perfume – had walked into the mall.

At the scene, Green met with mall security and loss prevention personnel. They located the suspect in a restroom and took him into custody without incident.

Several bottles of men’s and women’s fragrances, valued at a combined $544, were recovered.

Durand Perry, 32, 962 Pine St., first floor, Central Falls, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was additionally taken into custody on an active bench warrant issued from Superior Court.
