Police Log - 09/10/19

DUI

At approximately 10 p.m. on Aug. 29, Officer Justin N. Martin and another officer were dispatched to the area of the Holiday Inn Express at 901 Jefferson Blvd. for a report of a possibly intoxicated driver.

Dispatch advised that the reporting party was following the suspect vehicle, described as a 2010 Subaru Impreza bearing Rhode Island registration. The reporting party told dispatch that the vehicle had been traveling in the middle of the north and south lanes before taking a right onto Lincoln Avenue and heading toward Post Road.

Martin then located the vehicle and observed it take a wide right turn from Lincoln Avenue onto Post Road south. The officer then observed the vehicle operate erratically, repeatedly crossing over marked lane lines and veering back into its lane, before initiating a motor vehicle stop.

Martin made contact with the operator, who is said to have had “very bloodshot” eyes and moved very slowly. The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that evening and agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

Nady Meas, 35, 75 Lawrence St., Cranston, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, she is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Meas was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. She was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test.

SHOPLIFTING

At 3 p.m. on Aug. 26, Officer Steven D. Moretti responded to the Macy’s location at Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting suspect in custody.

At the scene, an asset protection officer from the store told Moretti the suspect had been observed selecting and concealing a tank top, Tommy Hilfiger sweatshirt and fragrance testing bottle before heading to the exit without making any attempt to pay for the merchandise. At that point, the man was met by asset protection personnel and escorted back into the store to await police. The items, with a combined value of approximately $100, were recovered.

John T. Pelletier Jr., 31, 100 Woodruff Ave., South Kingstown, was arrested on a charged of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was held pending an appearance before a bail commissioner.

Shortly before 6 p.m. on Aug. 29, Officer Justin N. Martin and other officers responded to the JCPenney location at Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress.

While Martin was en route, dispatch advised that the female suspect had left the scene in a Ford Escape bearing Rhode Island registration.

Martin went to the intersection of West Natick Road and Lambert Lind Highway via Greenwich Avenue, and then continued north on Lambert Lind Highway to the intersection of New London Avenue and Howard Avenue to see whether the vehicle had entered Cranston. At that point, he observed the suspect vehicle traveling north on New London Avenue and initiated a motor vehicle stop before advising dispatch to notify Cranston Police.

Martin made contact with the operator of the vehicle, who matched the description of the suspect. The operator is said to have then acknowledged shoplifting items from JCPenney and retrieved the items from her vehicle’s back seat. The items were later returned to the store.

A loss prevention officer from JCPenney was subsequently brought to the location of the motor vehicle stop and identified the operator as the shoplifting suspect, Martin reports.

According to a written statement from the loss prevention officer, the suspect had been observed concealing lipstick, lip gloss and eyebrow pencils – with a combined value of approximately $100 – in her purse before exiting the store without making any attempt to pay. The suspect is said to have refused to return to the store when met by loss prevention personnel.

Amie E. Goodinson, 28, 129 Simmonsville Ave., Johnston, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

Shortly before noon on Aug. 31, Officer Zachary J. Black responded to the Walmart location at 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of shoplifting. Dispatch advised that a possibly intoxicated suspect was in the custody of loss prevention personnel.

At the scene, the store’s loss prevention manager told Black that the suspect had been observed selecting multiple items – including a razor, speakers and makeup – before attempting to leave the store through the garden section without making any attempt to pay. The woman was then met by loss prevention personnel and escorted back into the store. The merchandise, valued at a combined $221.79, was recovered.

Faith C. Morris, 37, 34 Walker St., West Warwick, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

Just after 7 p.m. on Aug. 31, Officer Anthony J. D’Abrosca responded to the Walmart location at 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress. Dispatch advised that the male suspect had reportedly concealed merchandise in his pants before running from the scene.

Upon D’Abrosca’s arrival, another officer was already on scene and speaking with witnesses. The suspect was then located in the front parking lot of the Walmart and taken into custody.

A loss prevention officer at the store told police the suspect had been observed selecting wireless speakers and headphones from the electronics department before proceeding to the automotive section, where he concealed the items in his pants. The suspect was then seen exiting the store without making any attempt to pay, and he fled when met by loss prevention personnel. The combined value of the stolen items was placed at $106.40.

Jospcar Gomez Cueto, 21, 59 Health Ave., Apt. 1, Providence, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was held as a probation violator pending a court appearance.

LARCENY

On Aug. 27 at 8:43 a.m., Officer Daniel J. O’Connell responded to a St. George Court home for a report of attempted larceny from a vehicle. At the scene, the reporting party told O’Connell that a vehicle belonging to his wife had been entered and rummaged through earlier that morning. The reporting party showed the officer security camera footage of the incident, with a time stamp of 3:47 a.m., on which a man wearing a ski mask and black clothing is seen entering the unlocked vehicle.

The reporting party indicated no items were taken from the vehicle. The matter was documented.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Shortly before 1 a.m., officers Anthony J. D’Abrosca and Richard P. Odell were conducting a directed patrol on Interstate 95 south when they observed a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee bearing Massachusetts registration traveling at nearly 90 mph in a 55 mph zone.

The officers initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the male operator. D’Abrosca reports he immediately detected the odor of marijuana, and the female passenger was observed holding a clear plastic bag containing a leafy substance that appearance consistent with marijuana. The operator is said to have claimed ownership of the bag and a marijuana cigarette found in the vehicle.

According to D’Abrosca, a records check found that the operator’s license was suspended and that he had two previous convictions for driving without a license.

Keurys F. Pena, 30, 80 Sackett St., Providence, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court. He was additionally cited for possession of marijuana, one ounce or less, and speeding.

The female passenger had an active license and was allowed to drive the vehicle from the scene.
