Police Log - 07/16/19

DUI

Just before 7 p.m. on July 4, Officer Gerard J. DiTomasso responded to the area of Interstate 95 south at exit 10A to assist another officer with a motor vehicle stop. The vehicle – a white 2002 Honda S2000 with Massachusetts plates – had been pulled over after speeding and moving in and out of travel lanes without signaling.

DiTomasso made contact with the operator, who is said to have had a “strong smell of an alcoholic beverage on his breath” as well as “glossy, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.” The operator reportedly acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that day.

The operator is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Sombo Meth, 31, Lowell, Massachusetts, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He is said to have refused a chemical breath test while at headquarters.

Meth was later released into the custody of a sober adult and issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test, speeding, turn signal required and laned roadway violations.

CRUISER CRASH

A Warwick Police officer was hospitalized after his cruiser struck a stone wall at the roundabout at Veterans Memorial Drive and Greenwich Avenue early Sunday morning.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:34 a.m. as the officer traveled west on Veterans Memorial Drive, according to a statement from police. The officer – who was not identified – was conscious at the scene and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was listed as being in stable condition.

At the time of the crash, the officer is said to have been responding to a call for backup from another officer who was attempting to apprehend a subject on a warrant. No other vehicles were involved and no other injuries were reported, according to police. The crash remains under investigation, according to police.

VANDALISM

Shortly before 1 p.m. on July 2, Officer Michael D. Walker responded to the YMCA at 900 Centerville Road for a report of damage to a YMCA bus.

At the scene, the reporting party led Walker to where the white 2005 Chevrolet mini school bus was parked. YMCA staff are said to have found on June 30 that the back emergency door of the bus had been pried open.

The damage to the door was believed to have occurred sometime in the week prior. It appeared the bus had sustained no other damage and that no items were missing.

No surveillance video was available.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

At approximately 12:16 a.m. on July 3, Officer Christopher R. Cote was driving north on Greenwich Avenue when he observed a vehicle traveling south with an inoperable passenger-side headlamp.

Cote initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the operator, who was unable to provide a driver’s license but gave the officer a Rhode Island identification card. A subsequent records check found the operator’s license had been suspended and that she had been charged with driving with a suspended license on multiple previous occasions.

Melisa A. Chagnon, 38, 340 West Ave., Apt. 2, Pawtucket, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court. She was additionally cited for headlamps on vehicles.

At 4:40 p.m. on July 4, Officer Stephanie R. Pabis and Officer Derek Mourato observed a 2018 Chevy Malibu with Pennsylvania registration change lanes without a turn signal while traveling east on East Avenue.

Pabis initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the operator and two passengers. A subsequent records check found the operator’s license was suspended and that he had been charged with driving with a suspended license on two previous occasions.

Jeffrey W. Turner, 36, 160 High St., Apt. 210, Pawtucket, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

At approximately 7:46 p.m. on July 6, Officer Derek Mourato was traveling north on Interstate 95 when he observed a vehicle with Maryland registration traveling at approximately 70 mph. It was raining heavily at the time, the officer reports.

Mourato initiated a motor vehicle stop prior to exit 13 and made contact with the operator and passenger. When asked for a driver’s license, the operator is said to have told the officer it was suspended. A subsequent records check found the operator had three of more previous convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Jordan Vinas, 27 Thurston St., Apt. 1, Providence, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was additionally cited for speeding, and was held overnight pending an appearance before a bail commissioner.

WARRANT

Just after 7:30 p.m. on June 26, Officer Steven D. Moretti was conducting a patrol on Elmwood Avenue when he observed a tan Nissan Murano traveling toward Cranston with no front license plate.

Moretti initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the operator, who after a records check was found to be wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Superior Court.

Miguel Morel, 34, 59 Sawyer Ave., Warwick, was taken into custody and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions.
