DUI

On June 10 at 9:55 p.m., Officer Ali M. Jaafar responded to the area of the Wendy’s restaurant at 771 Warwick Ave. for a report of an accident involving two vehicles.

At the scene, Jaafar observed that the first vehicle involved in the accident, a 2007 Saturn Ion, had sustained significant rear-end damage. The second vehicle, a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, had significant front-end damage.

Jaafar made contact with the operator of the Jeep, who was standing next to his vehicle and “appeared to be swaying, unable to keep his balance.” The officer reports that the operator’s eyes were “severely bloodshot” and his speech was “extremely slurred.”

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier that evening and agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed.

Anthony A. Reis, 36, 51 Drowne Court, Cranston, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Reis was later issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and intervals between vehicles. He was transported to Kent Hospital for detox.

On June 12 at approximately 6:30 p.m., Officer Ali M. Jaafar responded to the area of Warwick Avenue and Airport Road for a report of a hit-and-run accident.

Dispatch advised that a pickup truck had struck another vehicle before turning onto Crandall Court and leaving the scene. A witness provided a license plate number for the truck, and another officer proceeded to Crandall Court, which is a dead end.

At the accident scene, the two occupants of the vehicle that had been struck showed Jaafar a picture of the truck and provided a description of its operator.

Jaafar then proceeded to Crandall Court, where the other officer had located the suspect vehicle. The truck had damage consistent with the accident, and the officers observed an open 40-ounce bottle of beer that the operator appeared to have attempted to hide.

According to Jaafar, the truck’s operator had slurred speech and “moderately bloodshot” eyes. The officer additionally reports detecting a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” emanating from the man’s breath.

The operator is said to have acknowledged being involved in an accident but denied being at fault. The operator is also said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly partially failed.

Thomas A. Miller, 37, 142 Namquid Drive, Warwick, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Miller was later released into the custody of a sober adult with summonses to appear in Third Division District Court on charges of driving under the influence, duty to stop for an accident resulting in damage to an attended vehicle and driving with a suspended license. He was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and leaving the lane of travel.

BREAK-IN ATTEMPT

On the morning of June 11, Officer Gerard J. DiTomasso responded to Sophia’s Tuscan Grille at 1729 Warwick Ave. for a report of malicious damage.

At the scene, DiTomasso spoke with the restaurant’s owner, who indicated that he found the back door stuck shut when he arrived that morning. When he was able to shoulder the door open, he found what appeared to be tool marks on the lower left portion of the door. The metal door jamb also appeared to have been knocked out of place.

No other damage was visible, and no items were missing from the restaurant. It appeared whoever damaged the door had been unable to gain entry into the restaurant.

Surveillance video was sought from a nearby camera, and the matter was forwarded to detectives.

LARCENY

On June 8 at approximately 12:12 p.m., Officer Gregory C. Accinno responded to a Spring Grove Avenue home for a report of a stolen bicycle.

At the scene, the reporting party told Accinno that one of her son’s friends had left a bicycle against the side of the home’s garage on the night of June 7. It was discovered the bicycle – a gray, eight-speed mountain bike with black lines, valued at approximately $400 – was missing the next morning. A check of the yard and surrounding area was unsuccessful in locating the bicycle.

A report was taken to document the theft.

At approximately 6 p.m. on June 13, Officer Evan E. Johnson responded to a Sheffield Street home for a report of a stolen bicycle.

The reporting party told Johnson that the bicycle, which was located on the front porch, had been taken sometime between the evening of June 11 and the afternoon of June 12. No other items were missing. The bicycle was described as a Royce Union Thruster with red and black handles.

Surveillance video from a neighboring home was requested.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

On the afternoon of June 12, Officer Gerard J. DiTomasso responded to a report of an erratic operator traveling south on Warwick Avenue. The vehicle involved was described as a Mercedes-Benz convertible with Rhode Island registration.

DiTomasso located the vehicle and initiated a motor vehicle stop at the intersection of Warwick Avenue and Sandy Lane. A records check found the operator’s license was suspended, and that she had previous convictions for driving with a suspended license.

Jennifer A. Brown, 47, 1551 Smith St., second floor, North Providence, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court and was additionally cited for operating a motor vehicle with a canceled registration.
