IDENTITY FRAUD

Just after 4:30 p.m. on June 2, Officer Maxwell A. Neiley responded to the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters for a report of identity fraud.

The reporting party told Neiley that on May 28, he received a bill from Verizon Wireless indicated he owed a balance of more than $327 for the purchase of two new phones and phone lines. The reporting party said he is not a Verizon customer and did not make the purchases. Verizon is said to have told the man that the account involved was opened using his Social Security number.

The matter was documented at the reporting party’s request.

On June 5 at 9:22 a.m., Officer Timothy W. Lipka met with a reporting party regarding a case of identity fraud.

The reporting party told Lipka that on May 15, he received a notice from a debt collector regarding $1,113.38 owed to Sprint for a cell phone account opened in his name. The reporting party said he is not a Sprint customer and had not opened the account.

The matter was documented at the reporting party’s request as Sprint conducts a fraud investigation.

LARCENY

On June 3 at approximately 4:30 p.m., Officer Matthew T. Caradimos responded to a West Shore Road address for a report of larceny from a vehicle.

At the scene, the reporting party told Caradimos that he had parked his work van in his driveway on Underwood Avenue at approximately 10 p.m. the previous night. When he arrived at his work site at approximately 7:30 a.m. the next morning, he noticed that a drill set and other tools were missing. He indicated the vehicle had likely been left unlocked. The drill set was valued at approximately $400.

There were no witnesses, and no surveillance video was available. The matter was documented at the reporting party’s request.

Shortly before 7 p.m. on June 7, Officer Thomas W. Greene responded to a North Street home for a report of a larceny.

The reporting party told Greene that sometime between June 5 and June 6, a wrought-iron bench – weighing between 50 and 75 pounds, and valued at approximately $100 – had been stolen from his property.

As Greene was leaving the area, he was waved down by another individual on North Street for a report of a separate larceny.

The reporting party said a bench had been stolen from the front of her property sometime between June 3 and June 7. She estimated the bench’s value as between $50 and $75.

No surveillance video was available in either instance. Both cases were forwarded to detectives.

SHOPLIFTING

At approximately 9:13 a.m. on June 4, Officer Jeffrey B. Taranto responded to the Walmart location at 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress. Prior to his arrival, dispatch advised that the suspect was in custody at the store’s loss prevention office.

At the scene, a loss prevention associate told Taranto that a man had been observed concealing two pairs of pants and a shirt in a fanny pack and a pair of shoelaces in his pocket. The man then exited the store, proceeding past all points of purchase.

At that point, the man was met by loss prevention personnel. The stolen items, with a combined value of $48.78, were recovered.

John E. Greene, 29, 116 Shand Ave., Warwick, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

On the night of June 4, Officer Tammy J. Mello responded to the Walmart location at 650 Bald Hill Road for a report of a shoplifting suspect in custody.

At the scene, a loss prevention associate told Mello that a woman had proceeded through a self-checkout line without paying for all of the merchandise she had selected, some of which had been concealed in a handbag. The woman was met by loss prevention personnel when she exited the store.

The stolen items included two cans of carpet cleaning solution, a container of body wash, clothing and dog food and treats. The items had a combined value of approximately $70.

Lisa M. Capozzi, 46, 660 Main St., Coventry, was arrested on a charged of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

VANDALISM

At 9:39 a.m. on June 5, Officer John D. Madden responded to the Aldrich Mansion boathouse on Warwick Neck Avenue for a report of malicious damage.

At the scene, the property manager told Madden that sometime during the previous several days, someone had thrown a large rock through a window of the boathouse. The structure – which is unoccupied – had not been entered, and no other damage was observed. The value of the window was estimated at between $300 and $500.
