Police Log - 04/16/19

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Just after 5:30 p.m. on April 7, Officer Derek Mourato was traveling on East Avenue when he observed a vehicle take the East Avenue on-ramp from Bald Hill Road. The vehicle was operating at a high rate of speed and cut across three lanes of travel without using a turn signal.

Mourato initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the operator. A subsequent check revealed the operator was unlicensed and had numerous previous offenses on his record.

Christopher L. Lewis, 41, 33 Main St., Apt. B, Cumberland, was arrested and charged with driving without a license, third offense. He was transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing and released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

VANDALISM

At approximately 4:17 a.m. on April 8, Officer Kevin P. Warren was patrolling at Drum Rock Elementary School on Commonwealth Avenue when he observed the chain link gate leading to the school’s playground was open.

Warren walked to the playground area, where he observed a large steel antenna – possibly from the school’s roof – sitting on the ground. He also saw a green storage container at the back of the school was open.

Warren was unable to ascertain whether any items had been taken from the storage container, which was filled with toys and equipment such as bike helmets. A check of the entire school building revealed no other signs of forced entry.

SHOPLIFTING

At approximately 12:18 p.m. on April 3, Officer Nicholas J. DiNardo responded to the JCPenney location at Warwick Mall for a report of two shoplifting suspects in custody.

At the scene, DiNardo spoke with an asset protection associate at the store, who indicated that he had observed the two suspects select items from multiple departments before proceeding to the women’s fitting room. The associate said when the women left the fitting room they were carrying multiple bags filled with clothing items. A manager verified no clothing had been left in the fitting room. The women are said to have then proceeded past all points of checkout without attempting to pay, at which point they were confronted by loss prevention personnel.

The total value of the stolen merchandise was more than $1,000, according to JCPenney. All of the merchandise was recovered undamaged.

Aelamara I. Thibedeau, 18, 121 Forest Ave., Cranston, and Janeece A. Outar, 18, 203 Aqueduct Road, Cranston, were arrested and charged with shoplifting. Both were transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing and later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

LARCENY

On April 6, Officer Ali M. Jaafar responded to the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters to meet with a person reporting a larceny incident.

The reporting party told Jaafar that he had not received a FedEx package that records showed had been delivered on the afternoon of April 2. The reporting party said he believed the package – containing a carpet purchased from Home Depot – had been taken from his front doorstep.

A receipt for the purchase was entered into police records.

WARRANTS

Just before 9:30 p.m. on April 4, Officer Brian W. Fontaine was traveling south on Warwick Avenue when he observed a vehicle traveling above the posted speed limit.

Fontaine initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the operator. A subsequent records check found the operator was wanted on a bench warrant issued from Third Division District Court.

Harry R. Andrews, 57, 72 Third St., Providence, was taken into custody on the warrant and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. *** Shortly after 6 p.m. on April 8, Officer Justin N. Martin was on patrol in the area of Airport Road and Winslow Park when he observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

Martin initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the operator. A subsequent records check found the operator was wanted on a bench warrant issued from Third Division District Court.

Kristin L. Shelton, 38, 90 Village Green Circle, Coventry, was taken into custody on the warrant and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was additionally issued a warning for speeding.
