DUI

On the evening of March 23, Officer Anthony J. D’Abrosca responded to the Target at Warwick Mall for a report of a possibly intoxicated driver.

Upon arriving at the scene, D’Abrosca observed a gray Volkswagen with Rhode Island registration “completely on the curb” in front of Target’s main entrance. A member of the mall’s security staff told the officer he had observed the vehicle attempt to navigate a corner around Target before it sped up and entered the entered the sidewalk. The security staffer said the vehicle made contact with a shopping cart and began to back up before stopping.

D’Abrosca made contact with the operator, who was still in the vehicle’s driver’s seat. The operator reportedly told the officer that he was “just fooling around” and acknowledged having smoked marijuana that day.

The operator exited the vehicle and is said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed. At one point, D’Abrosca states, the operators “began to jump and dance, flailing his arms like a chicken, asking other officers to dance along with him.”

Adam M. Cafferty, 29, of 37 Continental St., Apt. A, Narragansett, was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

During a search of Cafferty’s person, police say they discovered a baggie filled with a white powder believed to be fentanyl. The baggie was secured and transported for testing.

Cafferty was issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on a charge of driving under the influence and cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test.

LARCENY

On March 16 at approximately 8:47 a.m., Officer Kevin P. Warren responded to the Thrifty Car Rental location at 2329 Post Road for a report of a larceny.

At the scene, the store’s manager told Warren that one of the vehicle’s located in the rear lot – which is used for long-term airport parking – was found to be missing all four tires and rims and was sitting atop bricks. While waiting for police to arrive, the manager said, another vehicle was found with its wheels removed.

A staff member led Warren to the location of both vehicles – the first a Honda Pilot with Connecticut registration, and the second a Jeep Cherokee with Rhode Island registration. The Honda Pilot had been parked on the morning of March 7, while the Jeep Cherokee had been parked on the night of March 15.

Staff indicated none of the surveillance cameras in the back lot were operational. Warren reports he discovered a pair of latex gloves near the Jeep Cherokee, close to a damaged portion of a fence that may have been used for access to the lot.

The case was forwarded to detectives.
