STOLEN CONVERTER

On Feb. 11 at approximately 11:47 a.m. Officer Daniel O’Connell met with a complainant in the lobby of police headquarters for a report of a larceny from a business.

The representative, from National Grid, stated that he was a supervisor and was reporting that a catalytic converter from one of the company’s work trucks had been stolen sometime between 3 p.m. on Jan. 31 and 7 a.m. on Feb. 5. The man said that upon returning to work on Feb. 5, employees discovered that the lock to the gate entrance had been cut at the substation on Centerville Road.

A crewmember then went to use the National Grid pick up truck when it was discovered that it would not start. Upon further inspection of the vehicle, it was revealed that the catalytic converter had been cut. The approximate value of the converter is $500. A written statement was taken, and there are currently no suspects or witnesses.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Officer Derek Mourato was dispatched to the area of East Avenue by CCRI on Feb. 1 at approximately 5:56 p.m. for a report of a two-car crash.

At the scene, he located two vehicles in the roadway. One of the vehicles was a Dodge Ram, which had rear-ended a Hyundai Tucson. The officer met with the occupants of the Hyundai, both of whom complained of pain and were transported to Kent Hospital as a result of the crash. They stated that they were stopped in the lane of travel when their vehicle was rear ended by the Dodge Ram. They also indicated that they were stopped in traffic due to the light being red at the intersection of East Avenue by the entrance of CCRI.

Contact was then made with the operator of the Dodge Ram, identified as Joshua Fleming, 38, of 26 Carlton St. in Coventry. Fleming reportedly shuffled through papers in a slow manner, did not respond right away to questions, and appeared to be distracted. Mourato detected signs of intoxication, and Fleming denied taking any drugs or consuming any alcohol.

Mourato reported that, due he was training in experience as a drug recognition expert, it was apparent that Fleming was under the influence of a narcotic analgesic based on his pupil size, his movements and dry mouth. When asked, Fleming agreed to submit to a series of standardized field sobriety tests.

Based upon the officer’s training and experience following the tests, it was determined that Fleming was under the influence and unfit to operate a motor vehicle safely. He was then placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was taken into custody and transported to Kent Hospital for a chemical blood test.

At the hospital, Fleming’s information was provided to hospital staff. Fleming was argumentative, and he reportedly stated that he was not going to give any blood or give any information, and that he would not cooperate with hospital staff.

Fleming also refused to sign paperwork. He was later discharged from Kent Hospital and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he was processed. He was charged with one count of driving under the influence, first offense, and one count of refusal to submit to a chemical test. He was held overnight as a probation violator.

SHOPLIFTING

At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 2, officers Jessica Masso and Walter Larson were dispatched for a report of a shoplifting in progress at the Famous Footwear store on Bald Hill Road. While en route, dispatch advised that the suspect was described as a black male with dreadlocks wearing a gray shirt and a red hat. The suspect was also reportedly carrying a bag after he left the store.

At the scene, the officers went to TJ Maxx, the Dollar Store, Hibachi Grill and Target in an attempt to locate the suspect, but he was not found. They then responded to Famous Footwear, where they met with the reporting party. She stated that the suspect, about 6 feet in height, came into the store and walked the perimeter toward the men’s clearance section, where he selected shoes. Store employees reportedly saw shoes in his bag as he was leaving. He was asked to pay, but walked out the front door towards the Dollar Tree. The reporting party indicated that they would like to press charges should he be found.

A witness statement was taken from several employees. Currently, the suspect remains unidentified. ***** On Feb. 10 at approximately 2:12 p.m., Officer Ben Bratko was dispatched to the Bald Hill Road Macy’s location for a report of a shoplifting in progress. He was informed by dispatch that a female suspect was being uncooperative with members of the store’s loss prevention department.

Upon arrival, the officer met with the reporting party, who provided a written statement and advised that at approximately 1 p.m., he had been conducting routine surveillance when he observed a female subject – later identified as Alexandra Rose, 24, of 54 Massachusetts Ave. in Warwick – begin to make rapid selections with no regard for size or price.

Rose was allegedly observed making several selections from the men’s department and fragrance section. She was then observed in the dress department concealing items in the shopping bag she was carrying. Members of asset protection from the sales floor were also conducting an observation at the time. Rose then proceeded toward the mall doors while she carried items that she had selected. She is said to have then passed all points of sales without making an attempt to purchase the merchandise.

At that time, Rose was approached in the mall by security, who attempted to take her into custody. She reportedly began to struggle and resist apprehension. She was eventually taken back to the loss prevention office, where eight items totaling $386 were recovered.

According to Bratko’s report, he observed Rose arguing loudly with security, who she accused of ripping her shirt in assaulting her. Rose allegedly stated, “Yeah I know I stole that stuff, but this old lady hit me.”

Rose was placed into handcuffs and transported to Warwick Police Department headquarters without further incident. She was issued a summons to appear in Kent County District Court on a charge of misdemeanor shoplifting. ***** Officer Frank Montanaro and other members of the Police Department were dispatched to the Target location at the Warwick Mall on Feb. 9 at approximately 12:31 p.m. for reports of a shoplifting in progress.

At the store, Montanaro met with other officers who already had a male – identified as David Myers, 35, of 680 Washington St., Apt. C, in Coventry – in custody outside the entrance to Target. Police say Myers was in possession of 13 New England Patriots hats and miscellaneous toys from Target, with the total value being $293.83. He also had in his possession 20 pairs of underwear from Victoria’s Secret valued at $10.50 per pair and a Patriots baseball-style hat and valued at $14.97 from Nordstrom Rack.

Myers was transported to police headquarters for processing. He was charged with one count of misdemeanor shoplifting and held as a violator.
