(Scatter-shot Docudrama)
Christian Bale is excellent in his portrayal of Dick Chaney, the ambitious, controlling Vice President who frequently overstepped his power as George W. Bush’s second in command.
The movie opens with the day the world changed on 9/11, goes back to Cheney’s early years as a college student from Wyoming with a drinking problem, and follows with his many positions in the business and political worlds.
Using a narrator and TV news clips to move the story along, the writers and director bombard us with an overwhelming amount of information, but never get at the heart of the man...if he had one.
Well, yes, we know he had one because he suffered from heart attacks.
We are left wondering where he would have ended up if it wasn’t for his wife (Amy Adams) taking control of his life, and the fact that he seemed to be in the right place politically at the right time.
I found the movie to be plodding and disconnected in its portrayal of many events. Good performances by Steve Correl and others made it fairly interesting.
Rated R with profanity.
