Urging passage of an infrastructure bill

Posted

To the Editor:

This week is national infrastructure week. Anyone who has been struck in traffic, hit a pothole, had a flight delayed, or had spotty Internet service recognizes the need for more government investments in our infrastructure.

As part of my role with the United States Chamber of Commerce, I spent last week in Washington, D.C. with local chambers and small business owners advocating for an infrastructure bill. We met with U.S. senators and with Congressmen and Congresswomen to urge them to pass an infrastructure bill. We have seen a groundswell of bipartisan support on this issue. Groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO are working together to get legislation passed. The average driver pays $533 in automobile repairs each year as a consequence of our dilapidated roads. Our economy loses $9 billion annually from flight delays, a result of our aging airports and air traffic control systems. Here in Warwick, sewer line breaks have caused traffic issues and resulted in a small business being forced to close. A number of communities need sewers. Neighborhoods surrounding T.F. Green would benefit from upgrades to the airport.

Congress passing an infrastructure bill would have great benefits for our country, state and city. This legislation would mean an investment in our roads, bridges, ports, airports, railways, schools buildings, broadband, and cyber security. Maintenance and improvement measures in these realms will positively impact people’s daily lives well into the future. Let’s hope the president and Congress can work together to upgrade our nation’s infrastructure.
