Truss ready for All-American Bowl

Bishop Hendricken standout tackle Xavier Truss recently added to his already-impressive resume last week when he received his All-American Bowl jersey that he will be donning this coming January.

The All-American Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events of the year, serving as an all-star game for high school football. Only 100 players throughout the country are selected each year, and Truss joins former Hawks Will Blackmon and Kwity Paye as Rhode Islanders to be invited to the big dance.

Truss is currently ranked the No. 15 offensive tackle in the country, and committed to Division I powerhouse Georgia next fall. Truss received offers from over 30 D1 schools, including Alabama, Penn State and Clemson among many others.

“It’s crazy, I can’t wait to get down there at the end of December. The game in January is crazy and I can’t wait to strap on my helmet and bust some heads. It’s crazy to think that my name could be amongst some of these names that are NFL stars now, some of them NFL legends,” said Truss, who thanked both Blackmon and Paye for helping pave the way for him. “I always love talking to Will Blackmon. Just knowing that him and I both came from Hendricken, both came from little old Rhody, it’s a great honor. Kwity helped open up the world of recruiting for me, coach talked to him about coming to see me. It kind of opened my eyes seeing that I could really do something with this. I definitely had a vision when I saw him get his (All-American Bowl jersey).”

Truss was presented his jersey at Hendricken in front of family, friends, and of course, his teammates. Truss was appreciative of the support, and is looking forward to further proving Rhode Island’s athletic strength moving forward.

“It’s awesome to have them here, definitely a special moment for me. To have them all here makes it better. Rhody can ball, I think Rhode Island gets overlooked a lot, not only for football but for sports in general. I think we have a lot of great athletes here but unfortunately, we get overlooked and it’s just something that happens … not just Rhode Island but New England as a whole. I definitely think we have a lot of athletes here,” said Truss.

Truss believes that his hard work and dedication to his craft is what has helped him make the most of his talents.

“Freshman year I thought I was good because I was big. Sophomore (year) I get a taste of varsity football and it’s completely different. I actually had to put the work in to be better, everyone is big, everyone is strong, that is when I really started to open up my eyes,” said Truss.

Hendricken, who currently sits in first place and is set to compete in the state championship, is entering the home stretch of the regular season. Truss is looking forward to finishing his high school career strong.

“It’s going to be hard for me to put my high school jersey back on because I only have two games left. That’s unbelievable, East Providence better watch out,” said Truss, who is also looking forward to getting his feet wet against some Division I talent. “I’ll think of it more as my first game in college because it’s like an all-star game. I think a lot of the players in this game are college-ready … it’s going to be my first taste of what Georgia is going to be like.”
