After four years of stellar play and months of being recruited by the top college programs in the country, Bishop Hendricken football standout Xavier Truss recently signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the Division I Georgia Bulldogs.
The 6-foot-7, 350-pound offensive tackle is widely regarded as the most recruited player in Rhode Island history, and verbally committed to the national powerhouse Bulldogs back in the summer.
Truss, along with his family, friends, and teammates, gathered in the theater at Hendricken to celebrate his signing.
“This day is amazing. To spend it with my family, I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long so the fact that I just made it official is awesome,” said Truss.
Truss made the decision to attend Georgia relatively early in the recruiting process. Chemistry with the team, as well as the education that Georgia provides, made it an easy decision for him.
“Obviously the success that they’ve had (in Georgia), I saw an opportunity to get a classroom education out of the school, I felt like I bonded with the coaches and players on a level that I didn’t really reach at any other school,” said Truss.
The signing marks the end of a long, winding process that spanned over the course of a year for Truss. As the commitment became official, Truss was thankful for those around him that helped keep things in perspective as he caught the eye of the nation.
“It was definitely new, something that I never experienced before. At the same time, I had my parents and coaches keeping me as humble as possible and reiterated the same things to me … to keep myself grounded,” said Truss, who is also excited to leave his legacy at Hendricken.
“That’s definitely important. The reason why I came here was for the tradition, the excellence, so to say that I am going to be among those guys that came out and was successful is great. I hope this wakes people up, I hope that people start realizing that (Rhode Island has) elite (athletes) not only in football but in all sports. I think our schools need to be taken seriously just like any other schools,” said Truss.
Truss will now set his sights on finishing his senior year strong, and hopes to be prepared for the next chapter ahead.
“It’s coming fast,” said Truss, who also recently competed in the US Army All-American Bowl. “Midterms are coming up for school and college is right around the corner. I just hope to be ready for it.”
