Great prelude to Thanksgiving dinner

RACE BEFORE THANKSGIVING DINNER: Runners, walkers and all those anxious for some fresh air and activity before joining at the Thanksgiving dinner table take off at the 5-K Turkey Trot held by the Rotary Club of Warwick at City Park.

SMILING FIRST: Sophia Maynard was the first female to finish the turkey trot, completing the 5-K in 19:27.

CHEERING THE FINISHERS: No matter whether they ran or walked, as long as they crossed the finish line Rotary Club member Dan Scanlon Jr. was there to cheer them on…and provide water and snacks.

HIGH FIVE FOR A TURKEY: The Evans family, dressed as Pilgrims with the exception of Hailey who was a turkey, did the trot. Here Hailey gets a high five from her mother, Nora.

SHE MADE IT ACROSS: As a joke Jen Bodi carried Hailey Messier across the finish line to complete her first 5-K.

NO BULLHORN: When the bullhorn went on the fritz, Chris Sanford climbed a ladder, gave instruction and then the countdown to start the 5-K.

LIMBERING UP: Runners and walkers alike join in stretching before taking to the course taking them on a loop through City Park.

SORTING IT OUT: Tom Sanford, who initiated the turkey trot as a club fundraiser, is joined by his son Chris, also a member of the club, as they direct participants.

THE NOSE GAVE IT AWAY: Michelle Farrow hasn’t missed a turkey trot since the Warwick Rotary Club started the event five years ago. She came dressed as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, winning a gift certificate to Travalo.

G-FORCE: Janet McAuslin and Paula Pugh of Greenwood Credit Union came dressed as members of the G-Force. While they weren’t among the first to cross the 5-K finish line, they won a gift certificate to the Safe House for the most creative costumes.

More than 320 runners and walkers awoke early Thanksgiving Day for the biggest yet Turkey Trot held at City Park by the Rotary Club of Warwick. Organizer Tom Sanford was relived to get a break from the frigid conditions of last year and for rain to have ceased by the 8 a.m. start. Wind was the issue this Thanksgiving, but Sanford was prepared with bricks to keep registration forms from blowing away. He estimated the 5-K with Dave’s Marketplace, Greenwood Credit Union, PuroClean and West Bay Eye Associates as sponsors raised more than $6,000 for the service club’s charitable foundation. In addition, participants donated canned and dried foods that went to Westbay Marketplace.
