The Bishop Hendricken outdoor track and field team impressed once again, winning the state championship with 134 points, finishing 39 points ahead of second-place La Salle at Brown University.

The win marks Hendricken’s 25th outdoor state championship, and completes the triple crown for the Hawks as they won state titles in cross country and indoor track this past year.

“Our hurdles came up big. We had a team meeting on Thursday and we stressed how important each of them would be and to go out there believing that every single point mattered. We have a very well-rounded team that was represented well in almost every event out there. Guys just came through, it was a lot of pressure but they did it,” said Hendricken coach Jim Doyle.

Talent and work ethic have led to the team’s success according to Doyle, who also credited the Hawks’ coaching staff in helping guide the athletes all the way from their freshman year.

“This was certainly one of the most talented groups that we have had come through here in a long time. We have had some talented groups in the past, but this team was the most committed, especially our seniors. One of the hardest things to do is win a triple crown and we were fortunate to do that. To do it, you need to have kids that are willing to sacrifice and put in the work and we did,” said Doyle. “Our coaching staff is great too and give them the guidance that they need, it’s a great situation. Our varsity team won a state championship, we also won a JV and freshman state championship, and it’s because we care about all 150 kids in our program.”

The Hawks will now travel to Saco, ME where they will compete in Saturday’s regional championship, followed by nationals the following week. Doyle expects his team to once again compete at a high level on the big stage.

“Going up to New England’s, it’s almost a sigh of a relief knowing that the big team events are over with. We’ll go up there and do the best that we can, we feel confident that our hurdlers will compete with the best in the region, our distance runners will have a big impact. Our distance runners were fourth in the nation, so they’ll do well,” said Doyle.

Here is a look at some of the local results from the state championship. BOYS

Hendricken’s Sean Fagan won the 110 hurdles as well as the 300 hurdles, while Seun Filaoye took first in the triple jump.

Hendricken’s Aidan Tierney took second in the 3,000 meter run, while teammate Duwaun Edwards took silver in the 110 hurdles. John Santos placed second for Hendricken in the high jump.

David DelBonis took a third-place finish home for Hendricken in the 1,500 run, while teammate Jack McMahon finished third in the 3,000. Filaoye took third in the 110 hurdles for the Hawks. Toll Gate’s Justin Perreault took third in the pole vault.

Hendricken’s Ryan Morel also finished third in the hammer throw, while teammate Nick Coffey took third in the javelin.

Russell White finished fourth for the Hawks in the 100 dash, followed by teammate Tom Comella in fifth. Matt St. Jean also took fourth in the 1,500 run, while Pilgrim’s Tyler Robbio finished seventh.

Hendricken’s Evan Reynolds took fifth in the 3,000 run, followed by teammate Luke Henseler in sixth. Edwards would later take fourth in the 300 hurdles. Hendricken’s Teighan Jeremy finished fifth in the high jump, while teammate Amuchin Timbo took fourth in the triple jump. Hendricken’s Cameron Hughes later took fourth in the discuss as well as fourth in the shot put, followed by teammate Max Paolino in fifth. GIRLS

Toll Gate’s Voski Armenakyan took second place in the hammer throw, while teammate Samantha Larrivee took fifth in the discus. The Pilgrim 1,600 relay team of Ava McCann, Hailey Fera, Sarah Lynch and Alanna Coffie took fifth place while Pilgrim’s Anna DeMenezes took eighth in the high jump.
