Titans set for final push

Despite losing a large chunk of its core from last season and welcoming in a new coaching staff, the Toll Gate girls swimming team has remained one of the top teams in its division and is poised to make some noise in this weekend’s divisional meet and next week’s state championship.

The Titans won their season finale when they traveled to Lincoln and topped Davies Career & Technical, 40-11.

Brooke Menard, Abby Ignagni and Lauren Fracassa won the 200 medley relay while Abby Ahlborg won the 50 free. Sophie Amore went on to win the 100 free, while Ignagni, Amore, Fracassa and Elizabeth Byrnes won the 200 free relay.

Oceana Lowe went on to win the backstroke, while Menard won the breaststroke.

“They’re doing really, really well. They’ve been great this week and getting prepared for divisions, they won here today, they have just been doing a great job. We’re a little young, but we have had a few freshmen really step up, they’re eager to learn and they have worked well with everyone, so that’s been really nice to see,” said Toll Gate coach Lonna Razza.

Razza has been proud of the senior leadership from the veterans, and has also been impressed by some of the underclassmen that have made an impact and helped make this transitional year a successful one.

“The seniors that we have, they were on that team a couple years ago that went undefeated, so although we lost a couple of girls from last year, these girls have been holding their own. I can’t complain, they come to practice, work hard, you come to the meets and they display it,” said Razza. “Abby is great, Oceana is a freshman and she’s been unbelievable, Brooke Menard, Sophia Amore, Elizabeth, they’ve all been great leaders. They’re awesome. They work great together, they help each other, they have great camaraderie, they root for other teams, they’re just great kids.”

The Titans hope to make a statement in the next two weeks, and Razza believes that they have what it takes to do just that.

“Going into divisions, I really think that they can make a name for themselves,” said Razza. “These kids work hard and they love to swim, and I think they’re going to make a name for themselves this week going against the other top swimmers (in the state), against those girls that are in the pool from morning to night. They’re ready.”
