By ALEX SPONSELLER The Toll Gate field hockey team picked up its first win on Tuesday afternoon when it cruised past Woonsocket 4-1.

The Titans scored a pair of goals in each half to set the tone and control the pace throughout the four quarters.

Toll Gate’s goals were scored by Alina Jencks, Annabelle Lafauci, Amanda Preston and Julia Krause. The Titans improved to 1-5-2 overall on the year.

Toll Gate was coming off of a heartbreaking loss to visiting Rocky Hill last week at Warwick Vets.

Tied at 1-1, Rocky Hill’s Francesca McCaughey would have a penalty stroke opportunity with no time on the clock in regulation. McCaughey would covert on the shot to give the visiting Mariners the win.

The penalty came moments before when a Rocky Hill shot deflected off a Toll Gate defender that was stationed behind the goalie.

Despite the defeat, Toll Gate coach Jim Areson was thrilled with his team’s performance and was encouraged by the steady improvement that it has shown in the past few games.

Areson said that he hoped to see the Titans get a win by season’s end and felt that the team was getting closer to that goal. Sure enough, Toll Gate turned around and enjoyed its best outing to date against Woonsocket.

“The girls played really well. The first time we played (Rocky Hill) we lost 3-0, they’ve just gotten so much better. This is a good group of kids. They haven’t won a game, but they keep coming and they keep working. They’re getting better which as a coach, that’s all you can ask of them,” said Areson after the loss.

Rocky Hill took a 1-0 lead over Toll Gate into the halftime break on an early goal from Katie Kerachsky. The Titans would quickly erase the deficit in the second half when they got a goal from Krause, which was assisted by Jencks.

Toll Gate’s Katelyn Volk had a big day in the cage, finishing with 13 saves. Rocky Hill’s Kaz Bradley recorded five stops in goal.

The Titans will hit the road to take on Classical this Friday night for a 5:30 p.m. showdown in Providence.
