Senior core to lead Titans

By ALEX SPONSELLER After reaching the championship game in 2018, the Toll Gate field hockey team would return to the postseason in 2019 despite having a young roster and dealing with multiple injuries in the starting core.

Now, in 2020, the Lady Titans are hoping to use last year’s experience to propel them to another playoff berth and possibly beyond.

“Things are going well, we’ve had a good turnout and they’re excited. I’m just happy for them to be able to have a season in general. Playing with the masks will take some getting used to, but that will come. It could be like this for awhile, but I am just really happy for the kids,” said Toll Gate coach Jim Areson.

The Titans now have a strong senior core to lead the way which includes six seniors.

Areson believes that the Titans’ roster is deep and has talent across the board.

“We have six seniors this year. Sara Rhodes will be playing center-mid, Meaghan McCamish is back which is huge because she got hurt last season which became a struggle for us. We’re expecting her to do some scoring. Meg Merrow is back in goal. We have seniors in key positions. Hope Flaherty is back at right wing, Erica Armstrong has definitely taken on a leadership role, Mackenzie Hiatt is also back after getting hurt last year. They’re the core of the team and they’ve really stepped up, all of them,” said Areson.

The team’s experience has also helped boost its confidence heading into the fall season.

“It’s a confidence thing. That is important. The kids that are good at it usually play year-round, our kids don’t. But by senior year, things start coming around, making sense. The year we went to the finals, we had 12 seniors and it all made sense to them. So a lot of it is experience in play. I think we can make the playoffs, we have a tough division with the schedule the league gave us, but the realignment has been very fair. We should be incredibly competitive,” said Areson.

Toll Gate will be getting its regular season schedule underway this weekend, but ultimately, Areson hopes to see his kids have fun and be able to make it through the schedule without issue.

“We really want to make it to the end of the year and everything from there is just gravy. We are kind of playing an NFL schedule. We’re still playing a lot of games, it’s not a drastic change, but my goal is to just get to the end of the year,” said Areson. “That is a benefit of distance learning, is that there is a great chance that happens, but we’ll see. That’s all that really matters to me.”
