Titans fall to Ponaganset

By ALEX SPONSELLER After winning its opening night matchup against Smithfield 19-11, the Toll Gate football team came up short, falling to visiting Ponaganset 33-0 at Cranston Stadium last weekend.

It was a tough night in the trenches for the Titans, facing a Ponaganset front that is one of the strongest in the state. The Chieftain defense forced Toll Gate into multiple turnovers and also came up with multiple touchdowns to set the tone early.

“(Smithfield and Ponaganset) are great teams, but Ponaganset is a big, strong team and we didn’t match up as well against them. A lot of it was self-inflicted. We had two dropped punt snaps recovered in the end zone for touchdowns which put us behind 21-0 at half instead of what could have been just 7-0. They just pushed us around a lot,” said Toll Gate head coach Jim Stringfellow.

Despite the lopsided defeat, Stringfellow and his staff have liked what they have seen from their group this season, especially from the young offensive playmakers that have been forced into starting roles early on.

“They’ve done very good but they’re young as sophomores and juniors. We’ll have (Domenic) Calise and Roman (Abatiello) back as well as DeVaughn Meade (next year). We have a lot of speed this year, but we don't have the size that we had last season. But we will have three years with these guys. Zach DeCorpo has been great at receiver this year and he’ll be returning,” said Stringfellow of the potential of this group of playmakers.

Leading the way is senior quarterback Greyson Pasquina, who enters his third year as the starting signal caller and his fourth overall in the program.

“Greyson has looked good so far and has made good decisions on when to throw or run. He’ll make a good college athlete next year. He’s a leader, he’s almost been a four-year starter. It feels like Greyson has been there forever. He has unbelievable experience and every year he’s built on it. He’s done a great job,” said Stringfellow.

The Titans will host Davies at Cranston Stadium on Saturday afternoon and then will take on Narragansett the following week. The Titans will need to bounce back fast in order to reach the postseason, especially considering the shortened schedule this year.

“We’ve made some progress. We would obviously like to be 2-0, but there is nothing we can do about it, we can just build on it and fix our mistakes and hopefully get a win next week,” Stringfellow said. “We’ve got to bounce back from a 33-0 loss, we’ve got to get that out of our head and have a good week at practice. Take it one quarter at a time and build some momentum.”
