Rushing attack leads Toll Gate to 42-7 win

The Toll Gate rushing attack led the Titans to a 42-7 shellacking of the hosting Scituate Spartans last Friday afternoon.

It was a windy, rain-filled game which led to the Titans to turn to their running backs to lead the way. They did just that, as Kenny Morel found the end zone three times on the ground while quarterback Greyson Pasquina also rushed for a touchdown. Ethan Durand contributed two rushing scores on the point after while Christian Rapoza hauled in a touchdown pass from Pasquina.

This was Toll Gate’s second consecutive win, which brings the Titans to 2-2 on the season and back in the playoff hunt.

“We had a great week of practice and a big win over Ponaganset last week and that carried over into this week. We had another great week of practice and the guys are really starting to take responsibility of the things they need to do,” said Toll Gate coach Jim Stringfellow after the win. “We feel good about their hard work and the adjustments our coaching staff has made. We have a tough matchup in Hope next week so hopefully we can carry the momentum.”

Stringfellow credited his offensive line for its play up front and helping set up some big plays from his backs.

“(The rushing attack) came up huge. We had to adjust our gameplan up front since (Scituate) plays like three or four defenses … our line did a good job of picking up its blocks,” said Stringfellow. “Kenny Morel had a couple big runs, Ethan Durand had a couple big runs, Greyson was being Greyson, so having those guys firing on all cylinders was unbelievable.”

Morel also produced on the defensive side of the ball, picking off a botched double pass by Scituate and returning it the distance for one final score in the first half to push the score to 28-0 at the break.

The Toll Gate defense was strong as a whole on Friday, with Scituate’s lone score coming late in the fourth quarter when a pass was tipped into receiver Dom Petrarca’s hands in the end zone.

“Our defensive coordinator Nick Salois puts a lot of work in to prepare these guys and the kids believe in him, they take a lot of pride in their work and have played very well for two weeks in a row,” said Stringfellow.

The Titans will now host Hope on Friday evening at Warwick Vets for a 6:30 p.m. showdown. Durand feels the team has turned a corner as it enters the back half of the regular season.

“Everyone is coming together as a family and we’re playing hard-nosed football. Everyone has been coming to practice and we have been working harder on the field and conditioning. We’ve really come together,” said Durand. “We want to continue to play Toll Gate football and to show that we can run it down anyone’s throat.”
