Clam cakes, chowder and tasty baked treats along with bite-sized meatballs were enjoyed by an estimated 120 people who turned out Monday for the opening of the new Tides Restaurant at the Warwick Area Career and Technical Center.
The facility, an addition to the center was built by Warwick contractor E.W. Burman at a cost of $950,000.
Funding, explained center director William McCaffrey, came from the state Department of Education, when it turned over the center to the Warwick School Department. The city agreed to accept the building that came along with $3 million to repair the roof, heating system and other issues. With those upgrades completed, the department still had funds enabling the construction of the restaurant.
It replaces a windowless room that the center’s culinary students operated as a restaurant. The new facility is capable of seating more than 100. It is open to the public for lunch on Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays. A calendar with menu is posted on the school department website. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 734-3161. Meal prices range between $8 and $10.
Chef Instructor Ray Depot and Pastry Chef Instructor Eva Niosi run the culinary program with 33 students.
