The Toll Gate football team opened league play with a convincing, 41-19 victory at Smithfield (6-1 in 2016) on Friday night.
Senior quarterback Anthony Vann paced the Titans in the win, totaling three touchdowns while getting it done both on the ground and through the air. Vann compiled 94 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while adding five completions for 125 yards and another touchdown.
Kenny Morel and Michael Negri also found success in the ground game, with the two backs combining for 122 rushing yards. Negri was a threat in the passing game, as well, reeling in two catches for 28 yards and a touchdown, while also making a grab to complete a 2-point conversion try.
Toll Gate’s defensive play was highlighted by two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns, with Morel and Jaylen Brout each recording a pick six.
Negri chipped in with seven solo tackles, two assists and one sack on defense, while Trevoy Campbell recorded four solo tackles, six assists and a fumble recovery, and Matt Martinez had two interceptions in the secondary, as well. Alex Christina added three solo tackles, four assists and a half of a sack, and defensive back Qyon Pichardo chipped in with four solo tackles and two assists.
The Titans also got some help from Smithfield on the scoreboard, thanks in large part to a major miscue in the third quarter. With Toll Gate holding just a 13-point lead and pinned at its own 2-yard line, the Smithfield defense forced a fumble, but a Smithfield player picked up the ball and sprinted 98 yards in the wrong direction to give the Titans a safety, a 15-point lead and the ball back.
The Titans then added two more touchdowns after that play to secure their league-opening victory.
Toll Gate will look to get out to a 2-0 start when it hosts Scituate (1-6 in 2016) on Friday evening at Warwick Vets Middle School at 6 p.m. Scituate was doubled up in its season opener last week, 40-20, by Exeter-West Greenwich.
