Single bed bug at school has social media buzzing

Posted

All it took was one bed bug and the worst was being imagined for Wickes School students, their families and their friends.

“It was one on one student, so you know how social media is,” said Cathy Bonang, secretary to School Superintendent Philip Thornton.

News of bed bugs – not one, but many – hit Facebook and other social media last Wednesday. By Thursday Mayor Scott Avedisian sent out an email saying the school had taken measures to address the situation.

Bonang said custodians used bleach to clean the school and that the family of the child also took measures to clean the house. She said the school nurse took precautions to address the problem when she identified a “single bed bug,” keeping belongings and garments brought from home in sealed plastic bags. Bonang said the method of dealing with bed bugs is the same as with body lice.

She said under Department of Education regulations, the school department cannot send the student home because of bedbugs or lice.

“She was keeping it under control,” she said of the school’s nurse.
