Silence is irresponsible

To the Editor:

The Republican Cranston City Council members abdicated their responsibility to govern for the common good and inexplicably denied the pleas of constituents to openly discuss and vote on a resolution that supports restricting concealed weapons in our schools. Current law forbids weapons in and on school property, but it doesn’t apply to people with concealed weapons. If we believe that guns don’t belong in our schools, why do we allow concealed weapons?

The importance of closing this vulnerability is critical because of the looming federal “reciprocity” law, being pushed by the NRA, which would usurp our permit process and allow concealed weapons permit holders from any state to carry a weapon into our schools!

The Republican members of the Council and Mayor Fung apparently were disingenuous when they used concern for public safety and health as a primary reason for enacting ordinances prohibiting panhandling. Because when one of the most urgent public safety and health issues in our state and country, gun violence, is brought before them, they are silent. It begs the question, “why?” And should we continue to vote for representatives who are silent and abdicate their responsibilities to protect our children and teachers and community.
