Replenishing the pantry

A $1,000 legislative grant from Senator Michael McCaffrey will be used to replenish the shelves at the St. Mark’s Church food pantry that opens on the last Saturday of the month. The church runs a free lunch on that day after which those in attendance can choose nonperishable food and toiletries from the pantry shelves made possible with donations and purchases. Here, Mother Susan Wrathall shows McCaffrey the bare shelves following the October lunch where 98 people were served. (Warwick Beacon photo)

Isn't it nice that taxpayer dollars can be spent with no oversight, and as political favors for voting the "right" way can be given out to religious institutions?

Roger William's ghost is coming to haunt Smith Hill.

    You have been forwarned.

The General Assembly should be insuring that no Rhode Islanders go hungry. They have the power. But it should be managed in a transparent and open forum. Not doled out by the Speaker or the Senate President to all the good doobies in their ranks. Grants like this are pure and simple machine politics out of the Tammany Hall era.

    Back room deals.

Vote this way and you will get a cookie. Don't vote the "right" way and you will be out of office or a lone voice crying in the woods.

We need to bring back balance to the General Assembly. With a one party system, you wind up with Darth Ruggius and Darth Mattielus. Two there will always be, no more no less.

    Unless we change the system.
