Plenty of pancakes

For the fourth year in a row, Hendricken High School teacher and coach William Johnston whipped up his favorite pancake recipe and, with the help of 65 student volunteers and a dozen adults, served a pancake breakfast to veterans Monday morning. Last year, Johnston and his crew made 753 pancakes and collected 225 pounds of food and $800 for Operation Stand Down. Attendance was down this year, which Johnston attributed to the fact that the breakfast was held on Veterans Day, thus posing a conflict for many veterans planning to attend events planned by their units. Johnston is thinking of scheduling next year’s breakfast before Veterans Day. Attending for the first time was Bob Nichols and his wife Diane, who learned of the event from Hendricken chaplain Father Brian Morris. Nichols served 20 years in the Army. He was based in Bristol.
