Mark Cardarelli (second from left) revived a tradition this 4th of July when he painted a 13.5 by 7-foot American flag on his front lawn in celebration of Independence Day, his favorite holiday. The tradition was started the 4th after the September 11 attacks, in which the bravery of American emergency workers involved touched Cardarelli’s heart, himself a first responder. When he moved from North Providence in 2005 he stopped painting the flag until this year, when his old friend Chris Swiczewicz (third from left) came over to help him bring the flag back to his lawn, this time twice the size from before. The flag was carefully measured with string and painted color by color with field paint, protecting the different colored paints with wooden boards and using wooden stars to help keep the painted ones neatly placed. The flag is certainly a hit with the neighbors, who were not only interested in how the flag was made but also Cardarelli’s other displays of American flags for the 4th and his large Independence Day party. The positive response he’s received has given him hope and motivation to bring the tradition back to a yearly event. The flag can be seen on 117 Canna Street in Warwick and, according to Cardarelli will probably last until August, surviving through some weather and lawn care. Also pictured are Grayson Cardarelli (first from left) and Autumn Cardarelli (fourth from left). (Submitted photo)
