Sandwich Junction closes with a cake

Posted

The Sandwich Junction that Nancy and Alex Longiaru opened on Kilvert Street 41 years ago and later sold to their daughter, Kathy Ruginski, and her husband, Craig, served up its last sandwich Friday.

Kathy said it is time for her to work for someone else and Nancy, who is 88, is ready to take up golfing. Regulars at the shop questioned where they will now go and, naturally, passed around hugs.

But one patron more than any other, Don Higgins, will feel the absence. Don has been a regular all these years and since 1998 has lunch there five days a week. He even had his own booth. One of his favorites on the menu is Kathy’s carrot cake. Kathy baked him a going away cake so the memory will live on at least for a while.

From left are Kathy, Chris Luiz, who has worked at the Junction for 16 years, Nancy, Don, and relative newcomer with almost two years at the Junction, Judy Rozzero. (Warwick Beacon photo)
