Emergency repairs to two burst pipes near the Cedar Swamp wastewater pumping station that flushed 300,000 gallons of sewage into the drainage area of Buckeye Brook were completed Friday. According to the Warwick Sewer Authority, the pipes were six feet deeper than expected, prompting extra work. However, the authority was able to eliminate one of the manholes to save some costs. The work now is focused on road repairs and filling sinkholes caused by the breaks. WSA director Janine Burke-Wells is hopeful insurance will cover much of the cost – estimated at about $200,000 – of dealing with the breaks that prompted the Department of Environmental Management to shut down a portion of the upper bay between Conimicut Point and Prudence Island to shellfishing. Much of that area has been reopened, but because of high bacteria counts not related to the sewer break a section from Mill Creek to Highland Beach remains closed.
